kernel question

i'm a "kernel newbie", i guess you could say... meaning i've always just used the default kernel(s) that came with my distribution... i've never reconfigured or compiled a kernel before, although i consider myself fairly competent in other areas of linux.

anyways, to get to the point... i downloaded 2.4.7 from kernel.org today, in an attempt to get my usb video camera to work. (i'm currently running 2.2.17 and have had no problems except for the lack of usb camera support). i followed the instructions and compiled it, installed it, etc.

however, when i reboot my system and attempt to boot with the new kernel, i get:
Uncompressing Linux. Ok, booting into kernel...
or whatever that message is that you first see right before the kernel starts to load everything... and it just sits there. no error message, nothing. i even have to power my system off at that point because it won't let me ctrl-alt-del.

any ideas why it might be doing this?
