if a person were running, say, redhat linux, and they had to recompile their kernel...
what commands would that involve, and what do each of those commands do?
would you have to remount all your drives?
if you were running GNOME or KDE or XWindows, would it remain unchanged or would it reset everything (files, software, settings, etc)?
