unsuccessful linux install via ftp

i posted earlier about installing linux via ftp onto a compaq notebook 100 laptop.
i created a disk image from mandrake's ftp directory. it was "network.img", and the readme said that this image is the one to use if installing via FTP, NFS, or HTTP. however, here's what's happening:
1. i hit ENTER to install a system running lmandrake linux
2. i'm taken to a screen where i choose the installation method (FTP, NFS, or HTTP). i choose FTP.
3. it says "No NET device found. Hint: if you're using a laptop, note that PCMCIA network adapters are now supported either with 'pcmcia.img' or 'networkimg'. please try both of these bootdisks."
4. it gives me a list of drivers that i can use to try and gain NET access. it's a pretty long list. when i chose an item, such as 'floppy.o' or 'pcmcia_core.o', it asks me to enter the parameters to give to the kernel. after that, it simply goes back to step 3.

i have the option of pressing alt-F4 for kernel msg, and alt-F3 to see the logs. i don't know what to do. i realize this may be a stupid question, but then i guess an FTP install isn't exactly the best way for a linux newbie to be installing a distro...

btw: i have a xircom ethernet card, a RealPort Cardbus, in the PCMCIA slot. also, i've looked through any of hte relevant tuxedo.org howtos, which seem pretty extensive, and i can't find anything relevant to what i'm asking.
