Mo Linux 4 U

I'd like to post some Linux-related stuff that I've come across over the
past few days. To start with, there's news on the SCO vs. Linux thing: IBM
Files New Claims Against SCO in Linux Case
. Interestingly, IBM has
chosen not to indemnify its customers from possible IP lawsuits
involving Linux. Quoting the IBM sales guy (err, manager): "Most
indemnities are narrowly drawn and are often invalidated by customer
activities, such as making modifications or combining the indemnified
product with other code, which are central to the vitality of open
source." I wonder if that's a good excuse, but the point is valid.

In other news, John Schwartz clarified
Sun's Linux strategy
. "We have our own operating system, it's
called Solaris."

NY Times is carrying an interview of Linus Torvalds. The best part of the interview goes, "either we should make it a law that all geeks have dates--I'd have supported such a law when I was a teenager--or the blame is really on the companies who sell and install the systems that are quite that fragile." Now, I'm game for such a law in Bangalore :-)

And while at it, check out the new
features in Linux 2.6
. From the NPTL section: "The proc filesystem
has been modified to report only the original thread, rather than all
threads." Does that mean that ps(1) will show only the
main thread of a "process?" If yes, this is going to be terribly
useful for Java hackers.
