Gaim is flopping

Every time I try to log on to Gaim, it opens my Buddy List, but when I try to talk with someone, my first "hello" never goes through and I end up getting a box that says the program is not responding and needs to be killed.

Attention: I am a very raw beginner. Easy on the jargon. I'm using Gentoo, if anyone cares.
