adding new hard drive

this is gonna sound like a really stupid question, because it's so elementary, but it's not something i've ever really had to deal with before, so please excuse my ignorance. :)

i'm about to add another physical hard drive to my machine. what i need to know is: what steps do i need to take in order for the system to recognize the new physical device?
