I cann burn CDs!!!

For the first time on my new gentoo system I tried to burn CDs, but for some reason I can not. I was told that this is because I do not have SCSI emulation turned on in my kernel. I turned SCSI support, SCSI CDROM support, and SCSI emulation support on as modules, and turned off IDE/ATAPI CDROM support. I then recompiled my kernel. When I booted into the new kernel USB/PCI hotplugging gives me a hole list of errors, networking and X both fail. The only thing I changed is the SCSI stuff. I looked on my laptop in its kernel config, redhat 9, and SCSI emulation and SCSI CDROM is off but SCSI support is on, IDE/ATAPI CDROM is on. On my laptop I can do cdrecord -scanbus while on my desktop I can not. Can someone please tell me how to get my CD-Burner to work?

Thanks
