Gnome, Redhat etc.

I've been using fvwm as my window manager since '96.

I've been thinking of trying "the standard install" for a while. Well, last night I did the classic
rm -rf /
as root. Fortunately, my home directory was on nfs and was protected, and /usr/local also survived. When I reinstalled, I decided to try gnome. I'd noticed on my home machine (which I'm also trying to recover from some major problems and have just done a full install on a new motherboard), that there were all sorts of cool things that "just happen" with Gnome on Redhat.

I must say that the first thing that I've noticed is the performance. It's reminiscent of CP/M on a 4 MHz Z80, or perhaps a first generation Mac on an 8MHz 68000.

Then there is the terminal. I read email by sshing in to my home machine. The terminal seems to get confused way too easily.

I'm sure that a lot of the other annoyances like focus follow point, rather than click for focus, or changing the font size, or being able to go from one desktop to another by just moving my mouse over, are just a matter of RTFM.

I'm not asking for advice on it right now, just bitching about it.
