USB freezes?

Anybody have any idea about this problem?
Now, this is annoying - I have an iRiver iHP-120 (very sexy, I highly recommend). The iHP-120 can be accessed as a generic USB hard drive from any OS that supports it, including linux. Well, I'd been using it happily as such on my nice gentoo box (gentoo kernel version 2.4.20) for a while, until recently when I plugged it in, my entire system (well, my xserver, ssh server, and keyboard and mouse - I suppose other things may have been working, I just had no way to tell) simply froze - no way to fix this besides a hard system boot. The problem was reproducible every time I plugged the device in to USB/turned it on, except when it was plugged in and on during boot. Then I could unplug and plug it in to my heart's content -- mounting, editing, unmounting, etc.

I've made no changes to the kernel between the last time things worked right and when this problem started. I had, however, recently run an emerge -Du world, so all my packages are up to date with the stable gentoo portage tree (except for a few miscellaneous packages - they are probably unrelated, and moreover ahead of portage, so they wouldn't have changed with the update). The fact that it works when it's in at boot implies to me that there's a problem with the hotplug subsystem (version 20030805-r2 in gentoo). Does anybody know if this makes sense, or of any other reason for this problem?

Update: yeah - I'm pretty sure this was working just fine before wit hotplug v. 20030501 - anybody know why this might be happening with the new hotplug?
