Listens: Modem handshakes *shudder* ! :(

Need help with hone LAN.

Hi,

I am setting up a home lan and I need help.

I googled but it returned garbage or something of which I could not make sense of. :( TLDP.org gave an overall advice but didnt go any further other than writing the IP addresses for the cards.

My DIAS connection will be in place in two(read: few) days so i am to provide internet access for the entire lan(ed) machines.

Two win clients and one linux server (my machine thru which I also access the net !)
</relate-topic>

So my gizmo configs are as follows:

Client 1: (the server it self)

Machine name: Mach1

Pentium III 550 Mhz
128 RAM
8 Gig HDD
2 * Realtek NIC PnP to port 1 on the HUB (Frontech 8X) and other from the DIAS service equipment.

OS Redhat Linux 8.0

Client 2:

Machine name: Dumbtop

Pentium III 450 Mhz
128 RAM
8 Gig HDD
Realtek NIC PnP to port two on the HUB (Frontech 8X)

OS : Wind(bl)ows Me !

Client 3: Toshiba Satellite - Laptop.

Pentium IV 1 Ghz
128 RAM
20 Gig HDD
Realtek NIC PnP to port two on the HUB (Frontech 8X)

OS : Win XP Home edition

So I need help on how to go about and what do i do first ! My experimentation is limited to changing of IP addresses and fool around the Network neighbourhood in windows etc. I really dont know what to do !

Note: The cards are detected but they share the same IRQ i.e. 9 any problem with that ?

Please feel free to ask whatever further info you require.

TIA for giving me your valuable time.

With PetaBytes of warm regards,

yours,

nerdy / vikky / 'vi'krant aivalli

PS : Of what use is a static IP ? I understand I can host my site on a machine which has a static IP is it ? Is my understanding right ? And does DIAS connection mean a static IP may be provided ?
