Linux and dual head video cards

I recently changed the video card in my main machine as I needed a dual head configuration. I selected and installed an AGP Matrox G450 because they have great Linux support, and the price is quite reasonable ($29.95 from a local parts place).

In Windows XP each monitor is treated as a separate display.

But in Linux (Mandrake 9.2 to be specific), I can only seem to have it as both monitors are combined in to one wide display. This creates little annoyances, like when applications are opened they come up half in one screen and half in the other.

Can someone point me in the right direction to having Linux treat the display as two individual displays like Windows does?
