Listens: Dillinger Escape Plan - when good dogs do bad

hello everybody

i have a few problems i need help with ,

i have a toshiba satellite 1415-s173,
the problems i'm having
the built in nvidia card seems a bit off
and alot of the time the video for the thing
can get sketchy in older versions of linux
when i would exit out of x window on the generic
nvidia driver it would exit fine .. in newer versions
it does this odd scrolling thing so the console and
machine is useless till restart
if I use the factory nvidia driver (from nividia .com )
it leaves a black bar on the right side of the screen
about 1 inch thick and from top to bottom (doesn't
black out usefull stuff .. just doesn't use the hole
screen)

the above problems very from version and distro but are
always there

secondly ,
the keyboard is a bit off on some distros

last but not least ,
the toshiba tools and
the 56k modem doesn't seem to work in the least

i'm far from a novice in the linux world
i've been a linux user since early 1998
i think ? i've tried everything talked about
on http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/toshiba.html
most of which either didn't work or screwed up
in some shape or form and wasn't all that helpful..
i've installed about every newer distro on this laptop
my best luck has came with knoppix and suse

suse has the scrolling problem and doesn't like
the nvidia driver .. knoppix was perfect but it
used the generic gfx driver and it will not
let install anything but thru apt-get and when
you only have 56k at work .. that's not going work ...
and is a bit of a hassle when i have disc upon
disk of software that is useless on it
but at least it wasn't useless when you exited
X

thanks for your time
