Since we seem to have an abundance of experts on Links and terminals, I figured I'd follow up on my earlier post...
Background: I'm a 'nix newb, unashamed, but wishing I knew more, haven't read many manuals, would probably only understand so much if I did, as I learn primarily by being shown and then doing, though I *can* read, it's just hard to maintain concentration with all the distractions being on a network provides:) I'm not a programmer, last time I programmed anything was Turbopascal on a 68k mac running System 7.1 back in the Winter of '93, and I sucked at it, cuz I'd only ever been exposed to Apple IIe's and Commodore 64s and like Logo, and just learning the behavior of the Finder and configuring my system with Control Panels and Extensions was enough to keep me occupied that semester, not to mention my classload. So, I'm pretty green and I see nothing to be ashamed about htere, but if I ask a dumb question that's my excuse and just bear with me.
Running Mandrake 9.2 on a dual Pentium Pro 200 with 512MB of RAM I scrounged together from various inexpensive sources.
Anyway, KDE is pretty bloated but it's usable for a Windows/Mac guy like me who's trying to learn what I'm doing. But due to the bloat and the speed of my hardware, I am really liking Links now that I tried it, because it is actually pretty fast.
But from the sound of things, Links isn't properly configured on my system, though I haven't DONE any configuration (maybe that's the problem?), as the behavior I'm seeing doesn't match up with what I'm reading about in the comments from the earlier post.
So... couple of questions.
First, if I run Links outside of a terminal session, ie directly in KDE, I get images to display when a page renders. If I run Links inside of the Konsole terminal, I just get plain text with no images. I take it that's because the terminal doesn't have the sorts of routines needed to dispay anything but text, am I right? Or is my understanding flawed and in need of remedy?
Second, I can't highlight text, nor can I copy/paste it. Where would I begin to look to troubleshoot this? is this likely to be a Links-specific config file issue? Or is it more likely to be an X issue?
Third, why can't I click on buttons to submit forms for stuff like logging in to a website, or using web-based email? What needs to be enabled for this to work?
Thanks, all, for the lively discussion and any help and especially insight you can bring to the table.
