how do i cut things out of the bootup process?

i have a laptop, and i dont want it to bring up eth0 every time cause if i dont have an ethernet cable plugged in it takes a long ass time to get to the next part. also, id like to keep it from checking for new hardware because i take out the mouse and cd drive out a lot.
