Debian
All right, I know in the past I've been a mild critic of Debian. Mainly due to the fact that it reminds me too much of OpenBSD: An excellent project that is being held back just a LEETLE bit from being "great".
For my work machines, due to the extreme finickiness of IBM DB2 Universal DB, Tomcat, and Java in general I am just going to stick with SuSE - since IBM supports it. Long story. Don't ask. :)
However, I have my home server that has been gradually upgraded from RH 7.3 to RH9. No finicky software here, just a pretty standard Apache2 compile, Postfix, spamassasin, and PHP. So, I'm considering giving either Debian, or my long lost old friend Slack a shot.
I'm leaning toward Debian-unstable because I hear of good things on the horizon for Debian. Not only in packages, but also in security and other such things that interest me. My main question is regarding the 2.6.2 kernel included with unstable. Is anyone using it with either a uniproc or SMP system?
Finally, I have odd hardware. Specifically, the IBM PC Server 704. It's got 4 PPro 200's (SL22Z's), 1GB of RAM, and 6 4.5 GB disks that are going to get replaced with 10 9GB disks when I rebuild it. It has two Adaptec 7800 controllers, and a IBM ServerRaid controller. currently it's in a two-disk RAID-1 (/boot, /) and a four disk RAID-5 (/var/spool, /opt/www). I've heard of folks having issues with those controllers with various distros, but amazingly I've never had an issue with RH.
So.. bring it on. I'm finally ready to go back to kook distros ;)
