SCO

I'm sure everyone is nearly sick of the SCO drama, as am I.

However, for some of us in the position of moving to Linux in a corporate environment, in the event that hell freezes over and the world is englufed in flames (i.e. SCO actually wins) there are some real consequences.

Or are there?

My friends are geeks. Professional geeks, and every Thursday night we damn-near take over the smoking section at Perkins to bullshit. Tonite, the whole SCO suit came up. We got on the subject of, if it does actually happen, shouldn't we be prepared? I mean, all of us have production Linux severs and workstations in corporate environments. So this has Real Consequences for us.

But again, I say, or are there?

The reason I say this.. think about it. SCO's suit, and beef, is with Linux 2.4 and above. They don't care about 2.2 or below, and now that the suit is filed they can't really go back and say "uhh duhh" even though they may try. BSD has already been through this rigamaroll. And Sun done paid them off so they won't have to worry about it with their new Mad Hatter release.

Again, let's think about this. If they win, they win against IBM, and set basis for their claims that Linux 2.4 and 2.6 conatain their IP, that IBM illegally put in there. Legal basis would show that if that IP is not removed, they can sue anyone using 2.4 or 2.6 for commercial purposes (or even home users, for that matter).

But that's just kernels 2.4 and 2.6.

If they happen to win, I don't know about the rest of you, but I'll be finding some 2.2 source and just building that. SCO can kiss my ass. Sure, some of my hardware won't work. And sure, I'll have to go back to ipchains.

Just think about it. If, BIG BIG BIG if they actually do win, they don't win much. They win the corporate users too lazy, or unable to move back to Linux 2.2. The rest of us will weather the storm, and wait for Linus and crew to reinvent the wheel like before.

It's just something to kind of chuckle about.
