regulating resource usage
does anyone have any tips on how to regulate how much resources a certain process uses at any given time? the problem i'm having is that the primary xwindows process ('X') is using an average of 50-70% of my cpu at any given time, which is causing certain things to lag majorly, most noticeably my mp3 player (xmms). i never had this problem until i upgraded to mandrake linux 8.1.
i've tried re-niceing the offending processes and it doesn't seem to help. my system load with just me using it is consistently around 1.25-1.50, which to me is a little absurd, it never used to stay that high.
any ideas?
