barcode scanners and Linux
At work we utilize those Symbol PS/2 barcode scanners on PC's in our warehouse. If I understand how they work correctly, once you program the scanner with the type of base encoding you are using, it just is inputting like any other PS/2 device into whatever active field is on the screen. No drivers needed, etc. Can I use these scanners on Linux? If so, how?
So, we have like 10 PC's that are doing this. All are PIII/600's running Win 98 (I inhertied SO MUCH FUN from my predecessor). That's all they are used for. Terminal emulation to an IBM iSeries so they can scan in stuff for shipping and recieiving.
Instead of sending Billy and his Fascist Fun Gang in Redmond roughly $1500.00 for the pleasure of "upgrading" those 10 machines to 2000 or XP, I would much rather move them to Linux.
If you are wondering why I want to get rid of 98, well... we all know about it's legendary stability :).
And to be honest, those folks could GREATLY benefit from the stability of Linux. Since they only use one app, and that app is available for Linux from IBM, I'm set.
