linux on laptops
A friend of mine is trying to install linux on his dell inspiron 300m. The only major problem we're having (i'm guiding him through, this is his first attempt at linux) is that his only cdrom is USB.
So far, the only distro that boots is knoppix. All others fail when the kernel is loading with "filesystem not found". It seems to me this is because they don't load USB modules early enough but apparently knoppix does. I'm sure most of you who've tried installing knoppix on HD would agree that it's not the ideal distro for your desktop (unless you REALLY enjoy troubleshooting).
So I guess my question is, how would you instruct the system to boot properly from a USB cdrom drive, or what (decent) distro would do that itself? So far we've tried knoppix, mepis, debian, and kanotix, with knoppix being the only one that boots.
