patch submission...

I'm kind of wondering about other people's experiences getting patches accepted into the mainline Linux kernel. I'm not really a serious kernel hacker, so I don't exactly have Linus' personal phone#. Too bad, that. ;) I really only do a few device driver changes every couple of years when I'm trying to adopt a new major kernel version. So I've started using 2.6.x recently, and noticed a few areas where it doesn't do what I want, and set out to fix it... yet the small handful of patches that I have made recently (mostly driver fixes to get ACPI working) have all been gathering dust as far as I can tell.

If there happen to be any part-time kernel hackers lurking here... how do you stay motivated to fix things and add features when there seems to be no certainty that even simple, reasonable patches will ever be accepted without having to nag the maintainers?
