Forget the weird screen not-quite-flicker from before, I've got a much more serious problem now.
Due to this strange new computer calling its hard drives with sda# and a mishap, we have managed to erase probably all of our /boot directory. I know grub's gone, at least. I've read a few things about installing grub on a removable media, which would be all fine and good, except I can't configure the tar.gz (I get errors when I try to install gcc), can't use the .deb (currently working from a Fedora 7 live cd; we also have one for Gentoo and Dynabolic) and have no way to install grub. I also don't know how to access my actual hard drive from here.
Is there any way I can make my system (lenny/sid) bootable again, without having to reinstall again?
