Bad X! Go to your room!

Ok, on my distro (suse 8.2) there doesnt seem to be a way to close down X.  If I alt-ctrl-backspace it shuts down, but immediately restarts.  Same if I kill the process.  The problem is, when I need to install something that needs X to be closed (nvidia driver, for example) I can't close X!  Any ideas?
