strange problem

I seriously need some help with my mouse. I am running Gentoo and lately I am having a problem with clicking on anything.

My biggest problem right now is that I cannot open OpenOffice, not from the desktop, nor the start menu. I also cannot select the document from the home directory. And of course the paper is due today.

Other things the mouse does:

~becomes "stuck" on a window and turns into a plus sign
~turns into an icon of a piece of paper
~will not select something
~selects but won't click
~highlights everything in its path
~only works in Mozilla or when I am online
~will give me the impression that something has been selected successfully (computer "thinking" noises) but nothing happens
~occasionally the whole screen freezes

Restarting X does absolutely nothing.
