I really know how it feels to be.. .stressed out, stressed out.

Hey all. I'm a complete newbie at Linux-anything, and thus, I have created quite the situation for myself.
SCENARIO:
I have a Sony Vaio computer. For a newspaper article, I installed Mandrake Linux 9.2 on my computer. Well, not directly. First I needed to set up Partition Magic 8 to make space for it (it kept giving me the error that my drives were too fragmented to partition), and then I set it up. However, in the process it seemed to have converted the C: partition from a "Windows" type to an "Other" type. I tried starting Windows XP, but now it says that it's missing some critical files for AUTOCHK, when I didn't even touch that partition in the first place! I also tried running the Vaio's "System Recovery", but it tells me there's a fatal error, so no go there either.
QUESTION:
So what do I do? Is there some way to convert the partition back to its original status without having to lose all the data? And if I DO remove all the data, how am I supposed to re-install Windows XP? If anyone has any idea of how I can get myself out of the ditch I dug, it would be awesome. Thanks.
