Gentoo on a Compaq SMART2 SCSI RAID Controller

I've finished the entire gentoo install handbook, but I can't get GRUB to actually boot the system. I'm fairly sure it has something to do with either my fstab or grub.conf. I tried to follow the post below, trying to make substitutions for my use of gentoo-dev-sources (Linux 2.6.9) versus the guide's gentoo-sources (Linux 2.4.x). It didn't work and I'm not getting anywhere.

If anyone can look at that and have any tips on how to get GRUB & Linux 2.6 to work with a Compaq SMART2 controller, I'd be really grateful. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the /dev entires for the partitions/drives changing about 3 times depending on kernel version (2.4 vs 2.6) and other reasons. If I could just be told that fstab.conf needs to use /dev/ida/c0d0p3-style entries and grub needs it in the format of /dev/ida/c0d0/part3, or whatever will actually fix grub, that will probably solve my problem. Or if I just need to use LILO, I can do that too.

I am rebuilding a non-genkernel copy of gentoo-dev-sources over the weekend, to weed out any problems I may have been having with genkernel-built kernels. So everything should be pretty simple.

I'm so close to getting the first linux servers installed at my employer, I don't want to look weak fighting this issue in front of my linux-skeptical bosses. We'll be running NetDisco, Snort IDS, Syslog, and a Wiki knowledge-base on between the servers when I'm finished.

Lastly, I'm looking for suggestions in running syslog to receive syslog events from network hardware (Cisco switches/routers). I installed syslog-ng, as it seemed to have the most documentation in this area. If there's a better package, I'd like to hear about it. We'll be using the servers for viewing network status and health. Maybe there's more free software I should review beyond the ones listed above?

Sorry to those who see this twice. Cross-posted to Imagegentoo. Thanks a bunch, all.
