Mandrake 10 -- installation problem

[x-posted: linuxnewbies; linuxsupport]
I've got W2K running and have really just ventured into Linux via Mandrake.

I've installed Mandrake a few times before --- on the kid's machines, by way of a test ;-) --- but using the automated settings (all dual boot with W2K). On one PC (MSI mobo, onboard sound), it didn't pick up the sound and I haven't been able to figure out how to get the sound working; on another (GA 7N400-L) it was fine, and on a third (also GA 7N400-L) it was also fine, although I haven't yet got round to sorting out how to install drivers for its Wacom graphics tablet. But I digress ...

Here's my current setup:

Mobo: GA 7N400 Pro-2 (flashed to F11 BIOS and with the latest drivers)
IDE1: 80GB Matrox; 120GB Matrox
IDE2: Plex 24/10/40; Pioneer 108D
Another IDE: 40GB Seagate; Iomega zip

W2K boots from the small Matrox (it has a swapfile on the other Matrox which, I think, ought to be on a different IDE conector if it's to be of any use). Using PM8, I created an Ext3 partition on the larger Matrox for Linux, and put *its* swap partition on the 80GB drive.

When I went though the installation procedure, I used the manual ('expert'?) setup instead of the automated procedure, in order to make sure it installed in the Ext3 partition. It got past the 'installation' section, although it *didn't* finish cleanly --- there were a couple of things still left on the setup menu --- and I had to reset the machine because it hung after the Lilo bit.

However, it boots into both W2K *and* Mandrake, albeit only in 'verbose' mode (fsb?). The plain Mandrake option just hangs.

My problem is this: in the verbose mode, the onboard network socket isn't detected -- Eth(0) FAIL while everything else is reported as OK. I've tried configuring it manually, after Mandrake has loaded, but it continues to refuse to function and I can't figure out how to make it work. When I try pinging the router I get 'network unreachable' :-(

My USB mouse isn't picked up, so I've resorted to an old 2 button PS2 job (one mouse for W2K, another for Mandrake!), and the on-board sound doesn't work either. Oh, and Lilo hangs sometimes too!

I *think* the problems have a common root --- not completing the installation --- and I was wondering if I shoud try to resolve each problem separately (any pointers gratefully accepted), or if I should just re-install Mandrake (maybe even on 'auto') to see if it works second time around?

I suspect there's a simple solution, but I don't know Linux, and I don't think I can figure it out on my own 8-}
