NForce3 onboard audio / X weirdness
Can anyone provide some explanation why, when using the intel8x0 ALSA driver included with the 2.6.9 kernel (specifically, 2.6.9-gentoo-r14), enabling surround downmix in alsamixer causes clicking noises?
My system's sound is perfectly usable without surround downmix enabled; I'm just curious as to why such artifacts would appear when enabling such an option.
I've been looking around for an answer, but so far, nothing.
[edit] For those who are interested in replicating this result, here's my configuration: Athlon 64 3400+ on a Shuttle FN85 mainboard, NVIDIA NForce3 150 chipset (therefore, NVIDIA NForce3 onboard audio), alsa-{lib, headers, jack} 1.0.8, Gentoo Linux built for the AMD64 platform.
