VMWare on Sarge

I have been experimenting with running VMWare on Sarge and seem to be hitting a performance wall. When running three VMs or more, even when they are fairly idle, X will freeze for a second or so at a time, as if it is being choked. The CPU usage is acceptable, and the drive is not thrashing. I have already addressed the usual suspects in the VMWAre settings (pre-creating the virtual disks, reserving host RAM, etc...) and have changed desktops a couple of times (KDE, Gnome, XFCE4), but the problem persists. I should mention that the VMs are almost always running Windows.

The workstation is a Hyper-threading P4, 2.6 GHz, 2GB RAM and a single WD 80GB drive. I have run under both ext3 and Reiserfs with the same results. I am using a NVidia GeForce card with the latest drivers and have run both kernel-image-2.6.8-2-686-smp and 2.6.10 from kernel.org. All packages are up to date.

Does anyone have any similar experiences with VMWAre on Sarge? The only thing that I haven't tried (yet) is a different distro, just to compare.
