Moon Hyerin. 23. Human, in her own words. An average normal person living an average normal life, once upon a time. She never believed in the supernatural until it came for her head on — utterly destroying the quiet life she once happily, blissfully lived.
She lived her whole life in a small town among familiar people. When she was a freshman in high school, she met Choi Jisoo - a senior girl who had transferred into the high school when she herself was a freshman. Jisoo's father had been transferred into town by his Seoul based company. The two girls got on immediately. It did not take long for Jisoo to ask Hyerin's phone number and address, and even less time after that for her to ask Hyerin out and kiss her.
With the exception of the six weeks immediately following Jisoo's graduation, they were inseparable. Jisoo's father was recalled to Seoul at that time, but she moved back to town to stay with Hyerin. Working part-time at the bank to pay for rent and taking her college courses online was all worth it so they could stay together. Two days after Hyerin graduated high school she moved into Jisoo's small apartment.
"Together forever. Maybe even longer" was their joking promise.
As it turns out? Magic is real. Demons are real. And vengeful, spiteful djinns have no problem leveling cities with their anger.
One such djinn did just that in their town. Hosazol, Loremaster of Jewels, had been forced into captivity by an old classmate of Hyerin's named Aan Nam-gyu. He worked on Jisoo's floor of the bank and had foolishly brought in his genie to prove to his friends how powerful he had become. It was midday and like many others, Hyerin had come to visit her sweetheart at work for lunch. The main street was full of happy people and families.
Then came the explosion.
Many people died immediately. Jisoo was wounded badly. She shielded Hyerin from the shattering window. Hyerin locked eyes with Hosazol as she shoved through the rubble. Misunderstanding who and what he was, she begged him for help. Finding this funny somehow, he decided to reward Hyerin for surviving. His magic power, forcibly given, pulsed through her veins. The physical pain this brought on left Hyerin screaming and writhing before she passed out. Jisoo died before Hyerin regained consciousness.
The disaster left Hyerin lonely, grieving, and filled with an ugly hate for all things supernatural.
Hyerin is now, essentially, a genie. She still considers herself "human," though strictly speaking that is no longer true. Trying to speak of what happened is its own curse. Hyerin cannot utter the djinn's name as he willed it so. Anytime she tries to say his name, she winds up spitting out a gemstone instead.
She has come to Seoul to see all the things Jisoo wanted to show her and to mourn. She wants nothing more than to track down the djinn responsible and force him to lift his curse and retake his power, but that would probably involve admitting she has that power. Which might cut into her anger and hurt she's been nursing. Whoops.
