A note about UDP (thanks to Ditmar Van Belle)
- a) Windows multicasting on localhost requires at least one adapter. Unicast does not. To loopback multicasts, you must install the LoopBack adapter.
this Loopback Adapter is NOT installed by default (as is the case on any other OS), although even without Windows will still loopback unicast traffic. [confusing] - b) which means that, without loopback adapter, you will notice either
- – a sudden loss of all UDP traffic on localhost when an existing connection disconnects [annoying]
- – or an immediate crash on Disconnect/Destroy, when not properly handled [critical]
