A thunderstorm is interesting. A wildfire is interesting. I have stood in the middle of both and watched things change.

TIMELINE NOTE FOR CANONMATES: Felassan's main canon appearance is in The Masked Empire, the tie-in novel set right before Inquisition. He dies at the end. If you're playing Inquisition- or Veilguard-era characters and things get serious or plotty enough that we need an explanation for how Felassan is not super dead besides "idk don't worry about it," I'm happy to work that out with you.

character basics.
Felassan is the ancient and immortal variety of Dragon Age elf. A long time ago he was second in command of a resistance army attempting to overthrow his people's tyrannical self-appointed gods. More recently he's been a cryptid, an agent of a fabled trickster god, a mentor to a freedom fighting lesbian, and a corpse. He looks approx 35 years old and maybe 5'8"ish with a compact build, tan skin, violet eyes, face tatts (Mythal vallaslin for the familiar), and brown hair in a kind of pompadour undercut braid and bun thing. He's not my OC so none of this is my fault. Outside of ancient flashbacks, he dresses like a woodsman, often hooded and barefoot, with either a mage's staff or no visible weapons. His nonchalant, confident, serene-in-the-face-of-life-threatening-emergencies vibe might make him seem cool until he starts telling bad jokes and eating bark. To Thedosians who don't know what his deal is, he usually comes across as a Dalish elf who's uncommonly flippant about history and tradition.

ANCIENT ELVHENAN

You know.

POST-VEIL ELVHENAN

  • Immediate Veil aftermath: bad, bad, not good, bad.
  • "Their terror was trembling and palpable. Land as empty as this new void in us, that ceases the spirit, and makes us suddenly meat."
  • "A new life that ends [...] food, shelter, and what weather does to a body that can die. We barely lived beyond the fall."
  • People immediately knew to blame Solas for the Veil. Skyhold was also known as the place where it happened and became a pilgrimage site.
  • "Where are you, my friend? You stopped the Evanuris, but broke the world. Please tell me you didn't leave me to fix all this alone."
  • The Crossroads paths crumbled and putting things together well enough to travel again took time.
  • Whenever the very last person left the Lighthouse: "The great enemy has vanished, but so has the Dread Wolf. After rebellion, there is a cry for reconciliation: not only with those we fought, but with those who stood aside and must now justify their passivity..."
  • "We are trapped. The ones born here do not understand the keenness of what we have lost, or why so many of their elders weep as they enter uthenera."
  • Elvhenan continued to exist in its fractured and weakened state for about two thousand years, including a period of peaceful coexistence with human and dwarves.
Felassan's Experience: Chaos! Trying to fix things alone and obviously failing. Trying to lead what was left of the rebellion and hold the ideological line during the process of reconciling with people who were loyal to the Evanuris.

Finding Solas took a while — long enough for Felassan to take a nostalgic tone about seeing the Lighthouse again before he'd found him — but eventually he succeeded. Killed some people who did nothing wrong except know about the place he was hidden. Hid it better. Not 100% chained to the area afterwards because the eluvians still worked. Still had friends (and lovers! and enemies) in Elvhenan, was still involved in politics or at least getting mad at politicians, still regarded them as his people/countrymen and their society as something to preserve and try to shape into something better while they waited out this shitty apocalypse era.

Probably went through a prolonged period of trying to find ways to speed up Solas's recovery or find a way to use his knowledge in the absence of his power to drop/weaken/alter the Veil without him before giving up and admitting they'd have to just wait it out.

IMPERIUM ERA

  • Tevinter Imperium organized around 1195 Ancient.
  • Siege of Arlathan began around 981 Ancient and ended when Tevinter used blood magic to sink Arlathan into the ground.
  • There were also fights elsewhere, including Sundermount near Kirkwall, where a bunch of arcane warriors died trying to defend their elders in uthenera.
  • Most of Elvhenan was immediately enslaved, with some escapees such as those who made it to Cad'halash thaig.
Felassan's Experience: Missed most of the fighting and could not in good conscience throw himself at Tevinter and die because then who would replace Solas's blankies. Depression. Paranoia. All that rebellion for what!!! Sitting on top of Solas's uthenera chamber like Cerberus to make sure no one could come use him for blood magic and killing any humans who wandered into view. Staring at clouds. That's the six hundredth and thirteenth one that's looked exactly like a cat.

  • Tevinter Magisters breached the Black City in 395.
  • The first big attacks of the First Blight happened in 380; Dumat was killed in 203, and fighting against less organized darkspawn continued until 195.
  • Terrible Tevinter times lasted about 800 years until the rebellion, which began in 180 and ended 170 Ancient.
  • Shartan led an elven rebellion from within Tevinter that joined up with Andraste's invading force. (Might have gotten inspo from Fen'Harel stories or might have just been comingled with them after the fact.)
Felassan's Experience: Spent a significant portion of the Blight believing that that was it, it was gonna spread everywhere and destroy everything after all. But then the Grey Wardens figured it out (so he is kind of fond of them regardless of what Solas thinks). And here comes a slave rebellion! Maybe we're so back? On the other hand: kicking those assholes out of the Black City set Solas back centuries.

ANDRASTIAN ERA

  • 165 Ancient: A free land for the elves!
  • Oh no it's a kingdom with new nobility instead of an anarcho-communist utopia.
  • Oh no they're worshipping the Evanuris.
  • Second Blight 1:05 to 1:95. Also not great.
  • Armed conflict between the Dales and Orlais began in 2:09, escalated to an Exalted March on the Dales around 2:10, and ended in the Dales being completely crushed by 2:20. Most elves accepted a truce and converted to Andrastianism. The Dalish did their Dalish things.
  • The eluvians didn't go completely dark until Halamshiral fell.
  • More Blights blah blah blah not much relevant really happens until we hit the canon era.
Felassan's Experience: Went to the Dales for a looksee and found a mixed bag of hope and disappointment. But by now he's feeling very removed from the elves, partly because the closer they get to Solas being able to wake up the less imperative it seems to try to fix the existing world in small ways instead of just replacing it soon. Did not stick around to try to argue with them about vallaslin. Good luck kids hope u make it etc. Then the Dales getting crushed when it was already a scrap of a scrap put him back in cynicism mode.

By the Dragon Age was spending less time being a weird hermit and more time poking around in world affairs collecting information and trying to prepare the way so they could get right down to business when Solas woke up. But then he found Briala and through her became invested again against his will, like a loser.
