If there is someone on your friends list who makes your world a better place just because they exist and who you would not have met (in real life or not) without the internet, then post this same sentence in your journal.

Literary Help [Sep. 29th, 2005|08:24 pm]

Ok, our household is having a dilema. While cleaning up from dinner, I had a flash of memory about a book that I had read and although all of us have read it, none of us can remember what the heck it is.

All we can remember is the concept of a " _______ Witness" who wears white, is specially trained, and whose memory cannot be tampered with. In the book the specific witness is a female, but we can't remember any plot. It's a science fiction book, at least we think it's a book. Who knows.

Do you any of you out there in LJ-land have any idea what the heck I am talking about?

Just took several loaves of banana bread out of the oven. What a delicious smell. Too bad they are too hot to slice or I'd eat a piece right now with a big glass of cold milk.

Remember kids, alwyas check the reject produce area of your grocery store. You never know when you'll find enough over ripe bananas to make 5 huge loaves of banana bread for only 99 cents. :)

[Current Mood |tense]

Nothing like a house shaking BOOM (impact sort of boom, not explosive sort of boom) before bed to get you in the right frame of mind for restful sleep.

It sounded like something BIG fell on the roof or something, but there are no trees overhanging our house and looking around the yard and on the roof with flashlights found nothing. Nothing of note in the attic. Boiler intact in the basement.

We looked all around inside and out and could not find anything that could have caused the noise. Very annoying.

Ride notes... [Sep. 3rd, 2002|11:48 am]
lsl
[I wrote this up yesterday afternoon to post to a motorcycling list that I'm on]

Just got back from my first long ride in the rain.
Sitting with a cup of hot chocolate and a warm computer on my lap. :)

I rode the longest/farthest [1] I've ever ridden this weekend to central NH (yesterday afternoon) and back (today) with S**** on local numbered routes [2]. It was fun. :) :)

What I learned this weekend...
- bumpy roads/dirt roads are more fun when you are starting out than after 3.5 hours of riding.
- having a yummy warm meal waiting for you when you arrive at your destination is a wonderful thing.
- 65 in the rain is a hell of a lot colder that 60 in clouds/sun.
- standard blue jeans with thermals underneath keep you plenty warm when dry, but get kinda cold after a couple of hours in the rain.
- water wicking down your socks and into your nice dry boots sucks.[3]
- my gloves do not keep my hands dry in heavy rain, but they do keep them reasonably warm even when wet.
- nothing cures your fear of riding in the rain like 3 hours of riding in the rain.
- I like the sound of rain on my helmet. :)
- do not look down to see how soaked the crotch of your jeans are at 55 mph in heavy rain. You will not find out how wet your jeans are and the formally dry back of your neck will get very wet. [4]
- turning your head to the side at speeds above 40 mph does a good job of getting the large water droplets off the front of your face shield.
- rt 149 in NH looks like it'd be a lot of fun with dry pavement, but was sort of nerve wracking for me in the rain. [5]
- my jacket is quite waterproof, but I need riding pants.
- if you memorize the route numbers you don't need a tank bag/map holder.

All in all it was fun trip. I can't wait to do it again. :)

Can anybody give me any pointers about what I should or should not be doing when riding in the rain? For the most part I rode
slower and tried to take it easy on the corners. I also avoided obvious puddles in the road.

What's the common wisdom wrt tire pressure in rain vs. on dry pavement? I'm not sure what appropriate tire pressures are.

-L, cold, but still smiling. :)

[1] not very far, 100+ miles each way
[2] (in case anyone cares to know the route) 2a -> 2 -> 119 -> 202 -> 9 -> 31 -> local roads on the way out then local roads -> 31 -> 9 -> 149 -> 77 -> 13 -> 119 -> 2 -> 2a on the way back
[3] thank god for wool socks
[4] you will regret this for the rest of the ride
[5] but still fun in an odd way
