Oh, How We Will Miss You!

Lynn Marie Pfeiffer Thomas passed on August 25, 2009 in Pinedale, Wyoming with her daughters and husband at her side. Lynn was born November 20, 1939, in Los Angeles, California. Her family moved to Paradise Valley, Nevada when she was in grade school. Lynn has been an artist all her life and has always been fascinated by color and light. Lynn's passion for drawing was so great that, as a child, she made arrangements with her teachers so if she finished all her assignments carefully, they would give her drawing paper and allow her to sketch until the school session ended for the day.

Lynn graduated from Basic High School, Henderson, Nevada in 1957 and married Mike Hahn. They had 3 daughters, one of whom passed away as an infant. After her divorce, Lynn worked at Sears in window displays and as a secretary at Titanium Metals. During this time Lynn & the girls usually spent weekends on camping and exploring adventures in a VW bus.
She met Joe Thomas in 1962, who was a technical engineer at the Nevada Test Site and in the summer of 1968 Lynn and her girls came to his Big Sandy Lodge in the Wind River Mountains to cook, clean, pack and guide trips into the wilderness. She married Joe on December 2, 1969. In her words "I ran the Lodge as the 'boss' for the next two decades as a hunting and fishing outfitter. I learned the whole gamut of this business from bookings to taking out the dudes, every facet of caring for horses, the buildings and equipment, keeping supplies available and managing the employees. I felt these years were the best of my life. These experiences became rich inspirations for my paintings ..." Lynn worked in oils, watercolor, pencil and pastels, portraying with loving accuracy the cowboy at work, horses, the majesty of the mountains, the wildlife, the sheepherder, a rancher's wife feeing the chickens from a coffee can, a pioneer woman hanging out the wash.
Lynn and Joe sold the Lodge in 1983 and moved to Joe's family ranch at the base of the beautiful Muddy Canyon, Boulder, Wyoming, just north of the Big Sandy River, where she continued her prestigious art career. Lynn's passion for photography was astounding and she made over 70,000 slides before she switched to digital. Lynn has always loved to write and many of her stories and poems have been published. Her daily blog had many devoted followers. She was working on extensive memoirs when she passed away from pancreatic cancer that had been diagnosed in October, 2007. Her daughters have committed to finish her memoirs.
Lynn was a member of Women Artists of the American West, Wyoming Artists Association, Sublette County Artists Guild, Mixed Media (a Pinedale art group) and the LDS Church. She was named Grand Wyoming Artist in 2000 and has consistently won top honors for her paintings. People around the world have been inspired by Lynn's love, kindness, spirit-filled character, art, poetry, humor, and sense of adventure.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Eugene and Genevie Pfeiffer, her sister Barbara and an infant daughter, Michelle. Survivors include her husband, Joe Thomas of Boulder, Wyoming, daughter Beverly Roberts and her husband Brent, daughter Debbie Cummings and her husband Curtis, 4 grandchildren: Shane, Justin, Tayler and Clayton, as well as 2 great-grandchildren Samuel and Colton, Sister Diana Pfeiffer, all of whom reside in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Sister Gloria Stevens of Green Valley, Arizona, in addition to multiple neices and nephews, and her dogs Sparky and Raven. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the outpouring of love and support. No service will be held at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sublette County Artists' Guild, c/o Gina Feltner, PO Box 2151, Pinedale, Wyoming or Museum of the Mountain Man, PO Box 909, Pinedale, Wyoming. Special thanks to the Sublette County Artists' Guild for portions of this article.

At Sublette Center

Note from Judi.Image Lynn feeding the chickens, 1943. This picture reminds me so much of Lynn's painting of Ellen Richie feeding the chickens out of an old coffee can.

Image Lynn as TMCA Queen, 1957. Beverly mentioned that she wished she had this picture & Betty had sent it to me.
Friday 5am. Lynn is in the Sublette Center, Pinedale's nursing home, in hospice care. She came down by ambulance. Beverly said that Lynn has liver failure, edema & the kidneys are shutting down. She is on oxygen, pain meds & an IV. Beverly said, "We are hoping it will not be long for our mom." Keep Lynn in your prayers. Beverly, Debbie & Joe, too.

A Matter of Days

Wed. 1:00pm. Bonnie just called me to report all our fears.

Lynn's cancer has taken over her liver and there is no longer anything the doctors can do. The pain is NOT yet under control.

Beverly & Debbie are in Jackson & they will help Lynn decide whether to stay in the hospital or come to the Sublette Center in Pinedale.

Can't see the keyboard through the tears & sorrow.

Back in the Hospital

Note from Judi:Image Lynn called her daughter Beverly in Vegas & said, "Come". Beverly called me to go to the house. (What beautiful, new house-dresses Lynn has. Thank you, Gloria?) Lynn didn't want to go to the hospital, but I got hold of a friend who is an EMT and she came to the house (she came as Kris, but I know she was an angel). She knew exactly what to ask Lynn, she made the right phone calls (even connected with Dr. Kap) and the ambulance took Lynn to Jackson. They left the house at 7:45pm Monday night.

Image Kris is in the brown vest. Lynn's eyes were yellow & Kris said she was dehydrated.

Image If you double click on the above picture, you can see that Lynn is waving to me.

Image Kris & her husband, Chuck. See the halo over her head? I actually called my friend Vicky B and asked her to contact Kris, which was a good thing because Vicky had her cell phone #. Chuck & Kris were at a BBQ & he brought Kris right up. Beverly will leave Vegas early this morning (Tuesday) & be in Jackson tonight. All Lynn needs right now are your prayers.

No Calls or Visitors, Please

Note from Judi about Lynn's recovery:Image Here is an old picture from 1980s when Lynn & I hiked from Lamaroux Meadows by Big Sandy Openings to their ranch. It was quite a hike!

Lynn asked me to put this message on her blog for her to let everyone know that she is OK.

Lynn is grateful for the overwhelming concern and amount of help she has received. However, she needs another week (2 weeks would be even better) of rest, peace & quiet so she can just sleep and get better. She would be greatly appreciative. She wants the phone lines open only for the nurse & the hot lunch delivery. She is not ready for any visitors and they do not need any food. Even Lynn's daughters are not going to call her.

Lynn thanks everyone for respecting her wishes & for understanding.

HOME! Tuesday Aug 4 - 1:45pm

Update from Judi:
Lynn was released from the hospital this morning and is now home at Arrowhead. Joe is here too. Lynn rested all the way home & after she came inside, she went straight to bed, & immediately began feeling nauseous (that spelling doesn't look right. Sorry). So, we are letting her rest with a cold washcloth on her neck - and a plastic bucket.

She is asking her friends not to call her just yet. If you want to leave comments here, I will relay them to her. I am staying here at least for tonight & Wed nights. Bonnie sent Lasagna over with Joe, so we are well stocked. In fact, the freezer here is full. Joe & I made up a shopping list & we could only find 3 items that were needed.

Lynn thanks you all for caring so much.
