A new project inspired by beats Dutch drummer Mischa Porte posted to the internet during lockdown number 1, exactly one year ago on it’s release. For 70 days Mischa Porte played his lockdown blues away, for everyone to use freely. Marcel clinged on for more than 20 days and posted a track inspired by the beat of the day, everyday at 21:00h sharp. This EP is a selection of those tracks. Release date march 12 2021, marked the one year anniversary of the project and the start of Corona lockdown in Holland.

Although being a drummer and vocalist, when asked in a recent interview to name his favorite instrument, Marcel van As ([[]]togethermachine) replied after some thought: "the Piano". It has always been in his life from childhood, and in every home since. A better name for it would have been "Pinao", because typing the damn word is impossible.

This 7 track album "PiAN[[]]” follows the 2022  collab- album Inner City Groove, Vol. 1. with @prtr_jan. Prior to that [[]]togethermachine made his debut in june 2020 with "EP" as a prelude to the album "[[]]" that november. A few months later [[]]togethermachine released the EP " [[]]togethermachine feat. Mischa Porte, introducing れいか おぜき" ,a collection of songs inspired by drumtracks Dutch drummer Mischa Porte posted to the internet. 

In roughly 3 years time Marcel van As has produced a lot of music, almost always groove-based with an ambient type piano song here and there. But never did he compile a whole album like this, where every song is piano-driven, played by himself, every so often by other fellow musicians.
This is PiAN[[]], as in the instrument obviously, but also as in the classical indication "Pianissimo" in a musical score. This album is more melancholic, more cinematic as a whole. Not Piano music like in the overpopulated ambient piano, yoga -what -not "Amélie-tradition", but different. Sometimes with beats, orchestral, soundscape-esque, or like scoring darker movie-genres.
Like the name [[]]togethermachine suggests, four tracks on this 7 track album are collabs with befriended artists. Waterballet; a musician/visual ARTist who also made the video for Le Jour de la Fête. Leon Den Engelsen played and improvised all piano’s on Dawn. His studio in the woods somewhere deep in Denmark really reflect the beats and soundscapes [[]]togethermachine provided. Ludowic plays his Trautonium on Любовь.This original instrument was specially made for this innovative artist, who is known for his music for games and his modular studio set up. “introducing kokos” points to a compilation later to be released with tracks from old collab-duo kokos with Johan Hendrikse on keys. The track Au Bord De la Nuit pt.2 was recorded 20 years ago. Pt.1 will be on the compilation.

Marcel started out as a drummer for Rotterdam-based Handsome 3some, releasing an album and an EP with EMI/Parlophone in 1999/2000. After that he played drums for Coparck between 2003 and 2010. Always interested in combining electronics with acoustic drums, he started out programming beats and learn more about drummachines and samplers. This combination attracted the attention of well-known Dutch singer Spinvis, who asked him to join his band. Marcel has been playing for Spinvis since 2010, touring Holland and Belgium ever since and will be doing so in the future.

PiAN[[]] will be released on all streaming services on april 28 and on CD, available may 1st.

That subtitle for a beat tape might sound ambitious, but it’s exactly how I feel.
When you put together a tracklist and name tracks that have no lyrics, you always have the opportunity to create something that connects them. At one point, I thought about naming the tracks after famous songs—so that [[]]togethermachine would, in title at least, be linked to Yesterday by The Beatles or Purple Rain by my great hero, Prince. A cool idea, but maybe for another time. And, to be fair, not even my own idea… You know who you are 😉.
But no—these times call for a simple message. When you're as socially conscious as I am, you can't help but feel the need to push back, to offer a counterpoint… even if it's in something as small as releasing a beat tape. And letting MLK’s message shine through the tracklist feels exactly right.
“Create something beautiful every day” has been my motto since I started [[]]togethermachine. And most days, I manage to do just that—even if it’s just a tiny thing. A short beat, a beautiful sound, a few arranged strings. Even if it’s just a small act of creation each day, over time, it adds up to something much bigger. And just being engaged in making something positive, something beautiful, is already uplifting in itself… and it leads to something even greater.
Imagine if a world leader spent part of their day searching for finger paints to create a beautiful landscape on a small canvas. Would they still go on to order troops to the front lines right after? Call me naïve… but hey, just picture it. If we all made something beautiful every day, no matter how small… the world would turn out just fine.

These beats will make you nod, rap, dance or sing. They are instrumentals, happy as they are, but also open for collaboration. 
I consider these my children without a home; they were meant to be rapped on, sang to , you studying your trumpet on, or put them on your TikTok, your movie scenes or whatever.

[[]]togethermachine will release his second full lenght on april, 8 on all streaming services. This release is fully in sync with the [[]]togethermachine philosophy: a collab with inspiring artist @prtr_jan. The two artists met on Twitter, where the small collages of sound and video caught the eye and ear of [[]]togethermachine. These clips were the starting point of almost two years of composing, remixing, sculpting over 40 ideas of @prtr_jan (Twitter handle) to the 12 original tracks that this volume 1 is giving home to. A Volume 2 is in the making. It will be released when it is finished.
The record is also a collage of different sounds and genres, without it ever really béing those genres, rather than borrowing from them. It makes the album a whole, jumping from flavor to flavor telling the stories of life in city area's somewhat in decay. Gloomy but comforting as a nowadays Edward Hoppers' "Nighthawks"

@prtr_jan (Antwerp, BE) took up his old hobby making music a few years back, making a sport out of "doing everything on an iPad", combining the loop of the day with pictures or small clips from what he stumbled upon during his traveling day to and from work. Due to his desire for privacy that is all we can tell about the artist here.

In March 2021 he released yet another project,inspired by beats Dutch drummer Mischa Porte posted to the internet during lockdown number 1. For 70 days Mischa Porte played his lockdown blues away, for everyone to use freely. Marcel clinged on for more than 20 days and posted a track inspired by the beat of the day, everyday at 21:00h sharp.
From his homestudio, Marcel is now working on different projects at the same time, resulting in at least one more album to come out this year. All sorts of interesting collaborations are in the making.
