I habe a code. I consciously convalesced over the weekend, and have been taking it easy the last couple days -- I worked from home yesterday so I didn't stress my body with a commute (as well as plague ratting on Muni). I planned to go in today, but decided last-minute to stay home another day. This was assisted by my alarm not going off.

This week's Resolution Recipe: Coconut Fish Curry.
"Thai red curry paste is one of those genius ingredients that allows you to add depth and savory richness to dishes without much more effort than unearthing that tiny jar from the back of the fridge."
Assuming you get the right thing... )

This week's Resolution Recipe: Tamal de Cazuela (Mexican Tamal Casserole).
"An equally delicious, quicker alternative to tamales. This may be lesser-known than the Americanized Tamale Pie."
This is not as much work as it seems. It does, however, create more dirty dishes than it seems. )

When I put on today's button-down shirt at home, it was unmarked.
When I got to the office, it had an apparent grease spot right in the front middle.
I have not eaten or drunk anything since putting on the shirt. How?!?

This week's Resolution Recipe: Salmon and Soy Cakes.
"When you have lemons, make lemonade. When you have cooked salmon, make salmon cakes."

I've been remembering my dreams a lot more the last couple weeks. Nothing worth recounting, but it's a slightly odd change. The other night I went directly from "middle of a dream" to completely awake with no apparent transition.

This week's Resolution Recipe: Pepperocini Pot Roast... For Science!
"This is my take on Mississipi pot roast. The pepperocini season the meat, and their brine adds a little bit of vinegar tang."

This week's Resolution Recipe: Veg Breakfast Burritos.
"This is truly the most satisfying meal prep breakfast to make for a grab-and-go meal that truly ticks all the boxes!"
mixed... yes on grab-and-go, 'some' on 'most satisfying' and 'ticks all the boxes' )

This week's Resolution Recipe: Mortadella Cookies.
Medieval mortadella sausage is 1) not emulsified; 2) does not contain pistachios. But this is a thoroughly modern cookie recipe that (spoilers!) looks quite like its target. Pics on FB in the Saluminati group if you're interested.
Lengthy instructions, but surprisingly quick and easy )

Tenth Night

We're packed for Twelfth Night Saturday, except for toiletries needed tomorrow morning. As usual, I feel like I have forgotten eleven things. I don't think I have - that's why I have a list - but nevertheless.

This week's Resolution Recipe: Tunisian Orange-Almond Cake.
"Breadcrumbs, used in place of flour, give this Tunisian-style cake a delightful texture."

This week's Resolution Recipe: Autumn Galette.
"This recipe is a real celebration of autumn. It's a sweet-savoury combination of apples, shallots, and cheese. Serve with a sharply dressed salad." (Which I assume is made by ZZ Top.)

I've been fighting a cold (and losing). Not major, but a dry cough and now some congestion. Last night I took cough syrup, and when I woke myself up with a bout of coughing, the wife persuaded me to take an additional half dose since it had clearly worn off. This meant that I was slow getting up - which I knew was likely to be the case, but was probably a good tradeoff for not sitting up in bed coughing for a few hours.

Anyway, I moved slowly enough that I actually missed the backup bus that gets me into the office slightly early instead of significantly early. (shrug) Then I discovered that the wife had borrowed my transit card and not put it back. One upside to missing that bus: I had plenty of time to walk the block back to the house and get the card.

In other news, a couple years ago I bought a single malt advent calendar. It was great fun and I even bought a bottle of one afterwards. I didn't repeat last year but I did this year, and apparently that was a mistake -- I am still enjoying the 1 oz bottles, but I have fallen a week behind with the cold and general malaise and I may not go back to it until January. This goes in the file of "do not repeat unless/until you are genuinely excited about it".

This week's Resolution Recipe: Mushroom Sugo.
"I discovered I wasn’t using nearly enough wine or cream when I stewed mushrooms... there is constantly a quart of mushroom sugo in my refrigerator at home, to be used in any number of applications."
You're also not using nearly enough garlic. )

This week's Resolution Recipe: Seupa Vapellenentse (Savoy Cabbage Soup.)
"Like French onion soup went skiing in the Alps and came back heartier."

Friday the wife and I went to North Beach. We had a decent dinner at one of the many Italian eateries. (This one didn't seem too touristy, at least.) It was vaguely amusing part-listening in to the couple next to us on their first date.

We went to a comedy club after. We were reasonably early, so it was a short line. Went through the portable metal detector; the wife followed me and it went off. At which point they wanded me. Um, what? I took it with good grace, because while it didn't make sense I wasn't trying to sneak anything in.

The first of my two-drink minimum wasn't very good. As might be expected for a comedy club bar.
The two openers were okay, nothing to write home about. The headliner was funny but not side-splitting.

All in all, it was a good date out.

Thanksgiving with my dad went well. He is doing much better, although he still can't have alcohol or spicy food while he is on blood thinners. The traditional dishes tasted like my childhood ones. The Marlborough Pudding (apple custard pie) was good and fully set, despite some crust failure. I used a bit too much butter/lard and the sides slumped, so the slightly over-full filling covered the crust completely. And of course that meant a soggy bottom. But making a day ahead meant that it removed from the pie pan easily, at least, and I am looking forward to leftovers with tea today.
