This is a monument to Russel Alger. He was governor of Michigan, President McKinley's Secretary of War, and a U.S. Senator. His best achievement, however, was founding the Old Newsboys Association that provides winter clothing for poor children.

The statue is an allegorical depiction of the state of Michigan.

    Here's the full sculpture. (Click the photo to see a larger size.)

    I took the photos shortly after the sculpture had been cleaned. I like it better when the patina's had time to age a little.
