Rants & Ravings!

About Who or what has pissed me off now?

...And the wait begins! Nov. 2nd, 2009 @ 10:35 am
I'd make a joke about rising to the occasion, but I'm not baking bread...

(no, the other stuff you can make with yeast!)

Not beer (yet) but hard cider. And since it won't be ready until Christmas-time, spiced hard cider. if it tastes even half as good as the unfermented sample, it will still be awesome.

Is it bad? Oct. 28th, 2009 @ 08:43 am
So Geocities is officially gone. wah.
Those that do remember it will think of it as a hive of blink and overall bad code/design.
Those that don't will wonder what all the fuss is about.

"What's your point?" you ask?
I had a page there. About all it was guilty of was the abuse of tables, though.
I managed to extract everything even as the shutters were coming down, so now my image gallery actually serves a purpose! Saved me the trouble of re-scanning my anime cel collection, though it triggered some nostalgia and possibly re-enabled the collector gene.

I was looking at cel retailer sites. Is it bad when you see a good cel for a couple hundred and think, "...Oh, that isn't so bad."

*News of the World* (a bulletpoint reel) Aug. 12th, 2009 @ 12:44 pm
My blogging habit certainly has diminished by a considerable amount, hasn't it?

I wonder... Is it a direct result of returning to college, or is it just a convenient excuse?

feh.
It doesn't pay to dwell on that subject for too long. I spent the better part of 10 years doing a lot of what others wanted, and now that I'm 3 years into doing something I always quietly promised myself I'd finish, and doing fairly well at it no less, you'd think I'd have larger measure of satisfaction?

So what's happened since the last semi-annual filing?
*Threw a small New Year's Eve party; John skipped and wasn't up-front about why. Heated words exchanged through email... Apparently, there was some sort of apology; either I didn't receive it, or the tone was such that it registered as another attack, so the ball is still in his court even after 7 months.
*Quit playing WoW about the same time since I was getting frustrated by schedule mismatches, being ignored due to guild drama and being forced to do nearly everything alone. Picked it back up within the last week with a devil-may-care attitude since I'm running out of other things to entertain myself with in the long-run.
*Finished a couple games on the PS3: Mirror's Edge & Valkyria Chronicles. Also found a media server that doesn't suck, so I can watch Top Gear and maybe some anime without resorting to carting a PC around.
*The RAID is getting rather full, and mostly with recent stuff. The cd server crapped out, so only the oldest discs in the archive have been transferred back. The next plan is to transplant the server back into the caster'd-case and piece together another array with Tb disks.
*Squeaked through my only finance class with a B, and got an A in History of Rock & Soul, so GPA is still up.
*Made the Dean's List now that I'm eligible. It's now an open secret since no one aside from the grandmother takes any real/active interest in what I'm doing...
*Preordered Windows7 Pro Upgrade ('cause it works?)
*Succumbed to delusions of programming adequacy and got a book to learn Visual C++. The plan is to write a timing & scoring app to replace to serial-port-bound DOS antique the club is using right now. WTF is enum useful for?
*Found and upgraded to a used Intel Q6600 CPU for cheap. Discovered the GPU fan was seized on the 7900GS, so upgraded to a GTS250 since better cards wouldn't fit in the case. Squirrel-cage cooling fans certainly are a lot quieter.
*Took a pay cut. Could be worse.... Had to borrow again to stay in school.

Problem resolution Dec. 15th, 2008 @ 01:12 pm
It's always nice when the remedy to one issue resolved a seemingly unrelated one as well...

Since I put together the RAID for the file server, it started crashing randomly. At first I thought it was overheating since the CPU fans were making a lot of noise. {I swear those little fans they strap on to heat sinks are totally worthless in the long run!} setting up an bidder fan certainly kept temps down, but the crashes continued, becoming more frequent. Actually witnessing the BSOD didn't help. Here's the info on it to judge the relative uselessness of the info: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms795775.aspx
Didn't feel like dealing with it, and started forming plans to move file serving duty to another system....left the current one off for a couple weeks. In the meantime, I broke down and got a new battery for my SmartUPS-1400. It showed up on the 1st, and I dutifully connected it and plugged all the PC/network stuff into it. Fired up the file server for the hell of it....been running fine ever since.
Installed the PowerChute monitoring software last week, and now I see why I was having problems: bad power. The UPS has been going into voltage trim mode rather often, sometimes staying there for most of the day.

The best part of the UPS is even with everything on and processing away, it's showing maybe a 40% load with a 30-60min runtime.

Semester\'s End Dec. 11th, 2008 @ 12:05 pm
*thump*thump*
Is this thing still on?
More importantly, is anyone still paying any attention?

Eh. Whatever....I'm typing anyway.
For those who care, Season's Greetings. For those who don't....um....hi?

Fall 2008 is coming to a close today, and here are some of the things I've learned:
-Online classes are a poor way to teach classes, doubly so for 200-level stuff >.>
-VB isn't as difficult as I remember. I guess M$ figured a few things out in the last 4 versions?
-I really hate writing term papers. Even short ones. This one made me physically ill >.<
-CSU doesn't care about us working stiffs trying to take evening classes. I think I'll have a hell of a time getting all the required classes.

I'm expecting good grades, so keeping my GPA up shouldn't be a problem.

To say that I've been neglecting updates here is an understatement.
Rather than get into the gory details, I'll fire up the highlight ticker...

* I'm still in school, and I'm not making a hash of it either. A majority of the fluff classes are done, so I'm just getting into the degree track. Progress meter: 55%
* I've discovered a new subset of English: CourseSpeak. Found mainly in College Catalogs, used to 'describe' class offerings. Many words, little meaning.
* I lost my job of 5 years at the bank. Yeah. Surprise, surprise. The 4 weeks plus vacation severance helped me keep my sanity and my cool. I wasn't really happy there anyway. I'll miss some of the people, but mostly the tuition reimbursement.
* Got a new job as Sysadmin (read: IT Department) for a landscape design company. Yeah, I'm pretty much responsible for anything that has wires, lights up and/or goes beep. Found the limits of my Network-fu rather quickly but my ego wasn't wrong about my Server-fu. Yeah, it's only Windows, but give a man his pleasant fictions!
* Put my aquarium back into a healthy mode of operation after the 'algae storm'. Canister filters are the way to go. The shock of crystal clear water and new friends killed the last black angelfish. The tank is now populated by 4 rosy tetra, 4 lemon tetra and 2 small gold/black-striped angelfish. Oh and a big slab of driftwood. Aside from clamoring for food, I think they're happy ^^ Putting that severance package to good use ;)
* Finally put together the SATA-II RAID I'd been planning since I put together a new home workstation nearly 2 years ago. 2Tb of disk for a 1.5Tb software RAID5. Cost? $550. Still room for about 6 more disks and 2 controllers, I think. More severance spendage :P
* Took a trip down memory lane while filling up said RAID. Started pulling out all the archived anime CDs....ah, good times. Too bad the motherboard for the CD server is flaky, but a good thing that I was able to find a good last-gen Socket7 motherboard.

Your Score: Fennel

You scored 50% intoxication, 50% hotness, 75% complexity, and 25% craziness!

You are Fennel!

You're a cool cat. Crisp, clean, fresh, and extremely complicated. You're like quantum physics or modern jazz. Think Niels Bohr meets Ornette Coleman. You may look normal now, but once you sprout, you look kind of, uh, funny.
