Final Artist Statement

Throughout the semester I found that I struggle with my creative side in this class. It takes a while for me to find out what I want to do because it does not come into my head right away. I also struggled with Photo Shop during the first semester but now in this second semester I have gotten better. The project that I was most successful with was the Quilt projects. That was probably the only project I was sure about and creative about.

The project that was most connected to my life was my Quilt squares. It was most connected with my life because it showed all the people who were in my life and that I cared so much about. My past quilt square showed how my life was before my parents divorce and it shows that they are separated but yet family is strong. Right now I have to say the shutter speed is my favorite thing we learned in class because it was fun to do and it looks cool.

I believe that my strength has grown in my work because everything is not as boring as it was in the first semester. My pictures in the second semester make more sense and have more color in them. I also think that creativeness has shown in my art. It has improved throughout the year. I really think my work has improved and will get better in the future. I know now what I want to capture and how to capture it without it being a snapshot.

Blow Out & Panning

I created my blowout picture with the ISO being at 400. I think it could have been better but this picture is still bright I really like this picture. You can mess with the brightness in the camera to make it bright also, or use Photo Shop to make it brighter. Panning is when the picture is blurry but the subject is still and not blurry. It should look like the person is standing still but there are movements around the person. Our shutter speed was on 2 seconds. It was difficult to get a good picture without the subject moving because they ended up blurry too with the people running around. I like my picture because it showed the people running around my object and they were blurry.

Shutter Speed

Shutter speed defines the light that gets to come into the picture. We can control the shutter speed and control how much lights comes in it by having the shutter open. The shutter speed was at 15 seconds and the ISO was at 200. We used a lamp to get the light to be on us to show the movement. We had to move around real quick if we wanted to get the picture perfect. We had a few where we messed up. My favorite one was the one where we were standing and then we moved real quick to sit down and we were looking up.

Aperture

Aperture is how much light you get into the picture. It is the local length divided diamter of light. Your eyes can see the amount of light it captures. The second picture has small amount of aperture because there is not a big hole for the light. The first one has a big whole so more light comes in on it.

Flash

ISO is used when its bright outside, it is a film speed and it is sensitive to the film and pixels are to light. Flash made our subject pop out so we can see them and the ISO were dark but u can see the light in the background. It shows the orange or greyer on the pictures. The more higher the ISO gets it seems to get lighter but it still shows the grey in the picture but does not show the darkness to where we can not see our subject. Using ISO over flash will show the other stuff that surrounds the subject just like the lights when you use flash it loses all that light. Moving while using a fast ISO it catches the blur in the picture.

Flash

The Pros about flash is that it adds light, and freezes time and eliminates the blur. There are cons with flash that give disturbance to the subject and there are lighting situations, red eye, and hot spots. Flash would be good to use when there is not enough light in the area where the subject is. Flash is not a good idea when there is a lot of light and when you want to capture the true color. This picture is good for flash not being used because it captures the light and neon colors. It wouldn't have with the flash.

Metering

Light meters measure the amount of light that there is in the picture. In the picture we are focusing on the computer to bring in light so my partner can show up. In the picture where you can only see the computer we half pushed the button and took it. But in the picture where you can see my partner I got focused in his skin and it showed him. Spot metering can help in the future by focusing on something that I want to show in pictures.

Surrealism:Dreaming up

Interpret:

When you dream that you are underwater it means that emotions are becoming overcome by the sleeper and that life is not organized and needs a greater way to get organized. Dreaming about fish shows that there is a part of your life that wealth will show up in its way. Bubbles show that life is comfortable and that there is not any troubles in your mind. There are many troubles, problems and successes in life, by dreaming it helps indicate where the person belongs.

Surreal Practice Tutorials

In the desert tutorial we did many things to make it seem realistic. We used gradiants to make it the color that it can normally be and made it pop out. We transformed it so we could move it and then it can seem real and it pops out. We picked a blue for the sky and then made a graidant to make the blue seem real. We also used cloud paint brushes to make it seem realistic but we used different sizes and different clouds. These tutorials will help for future projects because we know how it will look if we combine different things together, and now we know how to make things seem realistic. We can know pop out colors and make things seem like they are real rather then fake.

Artist Statement

My Future

My future quilt represents the future I have aside for my life. I put many pictures together to make a quilt that has a lot of ideas that I see myself in years. I put two universities to show that I will be going to both in my life, which are ASU and UNC. I put a neonatal nurse flower to show that one day I will accomplish my university life to become a neonatal nurse as my career. I blended the pictures together to make it stronger to show that they are all together and represent a whole that belongs to my life.
It shows the love that I feel for myself putting the person who means the world to me and just putting what I can see myself accomplishing in years.

Graduation Program

I believe the back of the program was my strength, I think the pegasus and the words went very well together. I like how the words came out with the bigger meaning words being a different color. I think I could have made the graduation cap and diploma more interesting or could have fixed the effects on it. The graphic design was very hard because I did not know what to do or what to put, it takes time to figure out what I wanted to do. I think the most important thing about graphic designs is the way to make it so it can pop out and be very noticeable to people. The graphic designs play a big role and it makes the people want the product.

Senior Invitation

I believe my strength in my Senior Portfolio invitation is the front. I like how my picture is very bright on the part of my school. I also like how CCHS looks like. I could have made the front picture a little more interesting to make it pop out, and make it say "WOW." But I didn't I just put the picture of the school. I struggled to decide what I should put on my back and front cover, but I had to make my best effort to pick and I picked what I have on it now. I believe I did better on the Graduation Program rather then the Senior Portfolio Invitation because I think it was more creative.

My ideas came from me or my partners who helped me express myself in my quilts when I struggled to find help. The ideas helped my pictures come out really pretty. I'm very happy with my decisions because I think my quilts came out good. They are girlyand not someonelse's work but my own. My past has to deal with the past of my family, they made me become to person that I am today. My past showed my parents divorcing by splitting their pictures apart. My future is different and it shows the 2 universities that I want to go to and the future with my significant other. It also has a symbol of my career that I want to be when I'm older and out of college and that is a neonatal nurse. It was easy to find out what to express on my quilt but difficult to show how to arrange everything. I really like blending in the pictures, it made it look really cool and show many things happening all at once. I wouldn't change anything about my squares or change the project. Everything worked out good and how it was supppose to.

Artist Statements

In this portfolio there will be pictures that I took through the first semester in Digital Photography. We worked with the Rule of Thirds first then the last thing we worked with was with our header. I like my portfolio, I had challenges but some of the things we did I understood and tried to do a good job.
I learned how to combine pictures together and overlap them and change their colors so it looks cool. They are smashed together and it gives it a look that expresses them in a greater meaning to show more pictures in one. I also learned how to create a vampire and an alien, these projects were fun. There were paint brushes that we used and I would have never thought we could use them on Photoshop. I also learned how to blur the pictures out and that was a good feature to learn because you can blur the things that are not needed in the photo.
I think I was most successful with the personal words because I feel it came out better and I fully understood what we were doing. Plus it was the most fun one that we did this semester. I don’t feel like I messed up with this individual. I struggle with Photoshop sometimes and the creative ideas. I think its challenging to come up with creative ideas that will show something much more then the obvious. Photoshop can be confusing at times but other times its fine.
If I take more pictures then I know it will improve in the future. Now that I know how to use skills with the camera it will come in handy when I need it. In the beginning of the semester I didn’t really know anything about Photoshop so I improved in that. The first ones, Rule of Thirds and leading lines were difficult because it was my first time trying to look for it, but after those pictures I started to improve. I like this class; I’m learning a lot of skills that are really cool.

Personal Words

The lyrics I chose for this project are You Belong With Me by Taylor Swift.

I chose these lyrics because this song is really cute and it means a lot to me because Taylor Swift is my favorite singer and her words are very influential to me. She writes from what she expierences or what comes from her heart and I think that is very good. When i listen to it, it makes me happy because I know that special guy belongs with me. And I been through it. I think many girls can relate to this song because many girls think that there guy belongs with them. Thats whay I think it is really cute.

Social Issue: "Love"

In my picture there is a world to show how much a person means. There are dark colors in this photograph, and the red pops out with the words. The bottom of my picture shows dark and the top has lighter colors so it all goes together. But the world is the main object in this picture so it stands out.


My picture is representing love, and it shows that one person can mean everything to another person. That is what the world is showing. A person means the world to them. This relates to me because I have a special someone who means the world to me. Many people have important people in their lives so I know it affects them also.

Scary Effects

My favorite was the vampire because there were a lot more fun stuff that we did to make it. I learned about the blood brushes and glass brushes in photoshop, I didn't know you could do that. I learned that you could erase yourself so you can pop into the picture and just rease the background. I thought the glass was hard because you had to do things before you put it on there to make it look better. The fangs were hard to because I couldb't get it right. People who do book titles and illustrate in their books can use these. Also in magazines if they have Halloween stuff to do effects.

Critique: Robert & Shana ParkeHarrison

Building a bridge/dock in the water, there is a man who is lying on the dock with a hammer building more of the dock. There is a reflection inside the water that you can see, and imagine if you were him you would be scared to look into it having the fear of falling in.

The water is a lake going far through the back of the picture. Looking at the water shows that the water is being touch for there are lines in the water. Some of the dock is nearly in the water from which the part he is laying across to make the other half. He is a man who is making a destination possible by building.

A guiding line is being shown to get to the lake and the man since he is in the middle. The photo is black and white giving the contrast of the world without color. Looking determined he is ready to get the dock finished. This picture is a really good picture.

Photographic Effects

My favorite trick was the blur trick because it looks really cool, and makes the background fade and shines the person. I would like to explore the cross process because I think it makes the pictures look better, but I don't know hoe to use it well right now. I learned a lot, I didn't really know a lot about photoshop, so everything that was taught i learned.

Portraits

I think I was most successful at my surprise my portrait because my partner jumped in the air for the hoop and it was interesting to look at. I did a great job at that.

For my artistic portrait I got my partner to stand and the lighting reflected in this picture. He has a thinking face. He isnt happy in this picture. This picture was not the best though.

For my costume prop picture I used my partner to use his race car suit. I chose to use this because it explains him, and shows who he is and likes to do. I like how this picture came out because the lighting made it good and there are dark spots in the picture. I like this picture a lot.

I couldn't get the artistic one right, I didnt really know what to do or how to have my partner pose in. But overall, I think I did an okay job.

Contact Sheet

My favorite technique and picture was framing because it had a more artistic showing and the lighting made it pretty. I will start using light because it brings out the emotion in the picture and I think it makes it look better. My least favorite was extreme angles because I didn't really get the concept or my pictures didn't come out the way I wanted them. My most favorite was the framing because it made it look prettier.

Compositional Trick #8 Fill in Flash

Fill in flash effects these pictures because they make them lighter when they are really dark. You can see the faces clearer and can tell what they are doing. I will need to use fill in flash in the future when it is dark outside or the lighting isnt good to see the person. I don't want my pictures coming out completely dark.

Compositional Trick #7 Drawing the light

Drawing the light gives the person a feeling that isn't shown in any other pictures by our own. We capture the light surrondings in our own way and express them in the pictures. I see a person thinking in my picture. He seems surronded with multiple feelings like mad or sad. The shadows from the trees bring it out and makes it look droopy.

Compositional Trick #6 Framing

Framing helps composition because it goes straight to the emphasis and you only focus on that. Framing helped my second picture with the trees because it shows the rule of composition that leads straight through making you see my emphasis. My first picture with my partner didn't come out so well because he wasn't standing in the right place, if he was a little more far out it would have been better.

Compositional Trick #5 Extreme Angles

Extreme angles are a good compositional trick to know because you can take pictures from up above or from below. It captures the thoughts of an eagle looking down below or a ant looking up high. My first pictures doesn't show a good job at it because it isnt really looking down as much, but my second one is because I am looking up high to see it.

Compositional Trick #4 Simplicity

Simplicity helps strengthen the composition because it only focuses on the emphasis. People do not get distracted and they see what you take a picture of. Simplicity does not mean boring, it just goes more into depth of the picture, it is a really good trick to use when you want people to know what you take a picture of. It is very effective because it gets right to the point, and I used it by taking a picture of the catcus and a plant because you only look at that.
