Photos from Hopscotch, 2021

Hopscotch 2021 was pared down and definitely surreal, but it sure felt good to get out and hear some live music again. As always, I saw a lot of old favorites, discovered some new ones, and generally had an amazing time. See more photos and video on my Instagram account, which is where I hang out these days.

No One Mind at Kings

I had to miss the last night of Hopscotch 2018 due to last-minute hurricane prep, which meant I had to miss the artist I most wanted to see, Nile Rodgers! Still, I had a thoroughly enjoyable two days that included a flawless set by Sleep, with very fine openers Skeletonwitch. I also got to see a lot of new bands, namely locals Vacant Company and Henbrain, who have become new favorites. That's what I always appreciate most about Hopscotch. At some point I'm going to discover a new favorite band.

I did a little less Hopscotching this year than in years past, but still saw quite a few good shows. Asheville's Bask released one of my favorite albums this year, so I was looking forward to finally seeing them live. They more than exceeded expectations, as did Pallbearer, whom I haven't seen since Hopscotch 2012. Best surprise of the weekend was King Woman. I admit I wasn't taken with their latest release, but the live antics of singer Kristina Esfandiari made for an enthralling show.
