Darren Criss in Manila!

I feel like such an bad bad fan. I didn't have a big sign, I wasn't in costume, and I didn't quite scream myself hoarse. Still, it was incredibly fun! My fandoms aren't usually conducive to this sort of thing so it was very cool to watch Darren Criss live.

There were two shows, at Greenbelt and at Trinoma. They announced the shows and the mechanics very late. I was only able to get an entry pass to the show at Trinoma. For the Greenbelt show I had to stand and watch from a distance. Two hours before the Greenbelt show the crowd around the barriers were around three people deep and the balconies were lined with watchers. Five hours before the Trinoma show I was lined up and there were dozens of people in front of me. Some had been there since the mall opened.

The video I took at the Greenbelt show wasn't very good since it was from a distance. The songs he sang were a bit different in each show. The Trinoma show was better organized and the place was nicer since it was indoors and there were no trees in the way. For the Trinoma show I was able to video almost everything.

In the Philippines, concerts aren't so much performances as they are sing-alongs. The start is pretty shaky because the people around me were jumping up and down.

it's so cool, and it's totally awesome! )

The mini-me's are so cute! I'm a sucker for de-aging fics and this is giving me tons of ideas.

Another semester finally over. I managed not to do too poorly this time around. Since classes ended I've been keeping busy cataloging my books which has been so hard mostly because I keep stopping to read a lot. Plus I seem to have become interested a few more fandoms lately. I've been flirting with Due South, Alex Rider, and some actor RPF fics. This is what tag browsing around ao3 does. I've also attended a couple of musicals lately which was a real treat. Right now I'm just catching my breath because the next semester starts soon and it will (hopefully) be my last.

vanishing lgbt books

[personal profile] marashapeshifter
The only bookstore here that actually had a separate LGBT section has been clearing out the LGBT books and doesn't seem to be replacing them. The LGBT section is completely gone in some branches and the books are heavily discounted in others. I bought a dozen books recently and they were all half priced or less.

This is really disappointing. LGBT books aren't impossible to find here, I've found a lot by prowling through second hand bookstores. But it was an amazing luxury to have a shelf in every branch where I could be sure to find books like that. There were even romances! That had two romantically involved girls/guys on the cover! Some were even bare chested and a few even had sex scenes that didn't fade to black!

I could order books online or buy them as ebooks. I've done a lot of both. But the first is very expensive and you have to deal with the long wait and the prurient customs people who may or may not charge you more depending on what you're wearing, and the second is just not the same as having an actual physical book on your shelf that you can fondle.

I'm trying to buy all of the LGBT books I don't have yet while they're still available. That way I'll have a bunch saved up that I can read until the next time bookstores here see fit to stock those books. You know, books that I can actually relate to.

There are Savage Garden fanfics! I did not know this. Why did I not know this? I became a fan as a kid after reading a Sailormoon songfic (don't judge) and none of my classmates had heard of them which made me sad. I never thought to look for fics about them on the internet! The internet is for porn really does have everything.

Lately I've had to scramble what with acads kicking my ass and now I feel incredibly guilty when I go a day without studying/working. It's very disconcerting. I do manage to grab some internet time between classes at least but I never really feel like saying anything.

Sherlock has been so much love. It was remarkably well written and I liked the characterizations. I was impressed at how they translated everything to a modern setting. I think the longer format suited them well, splitting a mystery up over several shorter episodes wouldn't have been nearly as satisfying. My only complaint is that we had too few episodes.

Right now I'm actively following Sherlock, White Collar, and Inception fics and I'm loving how they all crossover each other so easily. I attempted to read some Xena fic recently but ack, it's still a sore spot. I tried watching Six Feet Under because I'd heard so many good things about it and for what it's worth it was good, just too much of a downer for me in my current frame of mind. My attention span has also taken a blow, as you can see.

do not want

[personal profile] marashapeshifter
Several years ago I kept my online life and real life completely separated. I used to be paranoid about others finding out that I watch gay related shows and I was convinced I would die of shame if anyone found out I liked yaoi and yuri. I've relaxed a lot since then and now a couple of rl friends know about my online life even if they're not into fandom like I am.

But. There are still people that I want to keep blissfully ignorant about it like my parents and the rest of the family I'm not really out to yet. I wouldn't mind so much anymore about them finding out but there's still much potential for embarrassment there. It would also be very bad if a potential employer found all the kinky stuff I follow, especially in a sex-negative culture.

So. I have a facebook where I'm friends with rl folks and I DO NOT WANT it connected to my lj. If other users want that, more power to them, I just want to have a choice about it. I hardly post anymore and I'm not vain enough to think someone would crosspost their comments to me maliciously but all this taking my privacy out of my hands is seriously pissing me off.

Dreamwidth codes anyone?

I know I've been MIA lately. I'm actually trying to pass this sem so there's that keeping me busy. Other things keeping me busy...

A friend got me hooked on Adam Pascal. Unf.

I've gotten obsessed with Inception, I love the faux science involved in the PASIV device.

Looking forward to Glee. Cheyenne Jackson! Brittany/Britney! More Santana/Brittany! Kurt's boyfriend! So much to be excited about!

White Collar! Diana is so much ♥♥♥. I want to be her when I grow up!

Comic Con! These are my people. All the panels, the cosplays, the protests. I so wish I could be there.

I just watched Inception with my friends and it was amazing! I haven't had this much fun at a movie in ages. It doesn't feel the need to dumb stuff down for the audience. The best part was getting to pick it apart and analyze stuff afterward with similarly inquisitive people. Also, Arthur/Eames y/y?

'Butch Kurt' is so adorable! Even if that's likely not the effect he was going for. It reminds me of Tara pretending to be Buck in United States of Tara.

#1) David Burtka - He's the total package (Yeah, I did.) Singer, dancer, chef, brilliant actor and, hands down, one of the funniest people I've ever met. I'm very lucky to have him in my life.

At the top has to be Neil Patrick Harris picking David Burtka as his #1 for After Elton's Hot 100. It's so sweet! Just when I thought he couldn't get any more perfect.

I was thinking about how silly it was to write RPF about a het couple when one of them is openly gay but then I had to *headdesk* really hard because it's what slash writers do anyway except in reverse. I blame the sleepy. Ah well, Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele do make a cute couple and I loved the Jesse/Rachel duet. I'm actually starting to like Glee a whole lot more now that I've stopped expecting it to make sense. It's a lot more fun this way.

Archie Comics gets an openly gay character
marashapeshifter: (Default)
[personal profile] marashapeshifter
Wow. I used to read Archie a lot when I was a kid. They were pretty popular especially on long bus rides. I love that Kevin being gay isn't a big deal to Jughead. Instead Jughead treats it as a way to make fun of Veronica which is oh so very in character.

"They just like watching Veronica making a fool of herself, trying to get this guy to like her," Parent said. "At the beginning of the book, Kevin tells Jughead first that he's gay. And Kevin feels kind of bad and wants to tell Veronica why he's not interested. But Jughead keeps saying, 'No, you should wait to tell her,' because he's enjoying watching Veronica's antics."

Parent said the story works because it's wasn't something radical concocted just to introduce a gay character. "The story is very much in the true context of our Archie stories," he said. "It's Veronica being Veronica. The fact that there's a gay character in the story isn't a big deal to the characters. We didn't do something with turmoil. The guy just happens to be gay, and the characters accept it, and that's it."

how sad if it's true...

I've been reading that Melissa Etheridge and Tammy Lynn Michaels have broken up. On one hand it's so sad if it's true especially since they have kids. So many couples have been breaking up recently. On the other hand, I can't help but be glad that news about a lesbian couple is being treated by the media the same way as news about a straight couple would have been.
