Wow, everyone. I've been overwhelmed with offers for interviews for my project on Dreamwidth and female programmers. Anyone who has done anthropological or sociological research knows that one of the big challenges can be getting people to agree to talk to you, so I wasn't expecting such an excited response! I should know better when it comes to Dreamwidth :)

This suggests to me a couple of things: 1) People are really excited about their experiences with Dreamwidth! (Either that, or they are very angry -- those are usually the folks who want to talk. People who want to tell you how great something is, or people who want to tell you how awful something is. Somehow, I suspect this is the former.) 2) This is a project that deserves a real study, not just my final-paper-for-a-class thing. I'm definitely taking a research break when I'm done school next month, but I may decide to return to this, and do a real study, with IRB approval (ours is called the HSRB, Human Subjects Review Board, and it's their job to make sure that I conduct my research in an ethical fashion. You don't have to go through them if you're doing a class project, but you do if you're going to publish).

Lastly, if you haven't responded yet, I'm going to ask you to hold off. This isn't because I don't think your contributions would be important (I do!), but because I already am likely to have more data than I can use in a study of this kind/size. I only have a few weeks before the end of the semester, and there's just a limit to the number of interviews I can conduct and analyze in that time, and how much I'm going to be able to say in a 20-30 page paper. If we're already in conversation about how/when to do an interview, I'd like to proceed, unless you change your mind.

If you feel like you have something to say, and you don't want to wait for me to decide if I'm going to do a larger, formal study, go for it! Write it! Take a look at this or this, post it in , start your own study. Feel free to link me to it! I'm so pleased to see that this topic generates so much interest.

So, my last class for my Master's is Inequality and New Media. For my final project, I wanted to take a look at Dreamwidth. In the presentation [staff profile] denise and [staff profile] mark made at LCA, they said that 75% of their coders are women. I'm curious about what factors lead to the increased participation of women in coding, particularly open source projects, where women are historically under-represented. Dreamwidth has been so successful in this way. I'm hoping to use interview data to get at why that may be.

I love to speak with anyone (male, female, or any of the other gender flavors) who has done any coding whatsoever for Dreamwidth. Whatever you tell me will be kept confidential. I'll be using pseudonyms in my final paper, and your identity will not be revealed. You can email me at karenwolf@gmail.com. I'm looking to do interviews largely over IRC, at some mutually convenient time.

Denise knows I'm working on this project, and has generally ok'd my writing about Dreamwidth, but neither she nor Mark (nor anyone else) are responsible for anything I say/do/write.

I may also use information in public posts, but I WILL NOT be mining any private data (locked posts, #dw, stuff like that) for this project.

Please feel free to signal boost this... I will likely crosspost as the day goes on.

 Goody, more online toys to play with!  All of my userpics are on my laptop, so right now, I am userpic-less.  :(  Sad state of affairs.

Feel free to subscribe/etc. If I know you from LJ/IRC/whatever, I'll probably reciprocate.

I've been out of the loop for a bit, and I need to catch up!  I have a zillion questions, all of which I'm absolutely certain are answered elsewhere, so I need to find these answers, ideally without bugging the people who have already documented them.  First thoughts:
* what's up with styles?
* can I import my lj? I know dre was working on an importer, but I don't know if it's done/ready for action
* can I crosspost? With a client?
* how do I best find my friends with accounts?
* does this RTE actually work any better?
* what do I want to use this account for?  Anything different than lj?  I just started an lj account for notes re: thesis.  Would that work better here? (not on beta, obvs.)

I'm writing these down not because I think my readers should answer them (I'm sure the answers are documented elsewhere), but 1) to remember them, and 2) from a user experience perspective.  Will probably add to this list as time goes on.
