Frame für Frame

Animation is still underrepresented in Austria. It combines technical skill with artistic vision and spans a wide range of disciplines, yet much of the work behind it remains invisible. Frame für Frame was created to give Austrian animated short films and their creators greater visibility.

In the first episode, nine talented Austrian artists showcase their animated short films and offer behind-the-scenes insights into how their ideas are brought to life, frame by frame. From bold artistic visions to honest reflections on the creative process, Frame für Frame celebrates the people shaping Austria’s animation scene.

For the opener, we selected scenes referencing iconic moments in animation history, from Steamboat Willie to Ray Harryhausen, South Park, Monty Python and Pixar. The sequence was animated at 12 fps to capture the graphic, handcrafted feel of classic animation and to give the movement a distinct, stylized rhythm. A frame-by-frame animated bouncing ball connects the scenes and ultimately reveals the show’s title.

In the show, we used scenes from the interviews and behind-the-scenes material and presented them in a split-screen layout. The panels shift between different formats, from classic 4:3 to portrait, with at least three frames visible at once to highlight that animation is a handcrafted process created truly frame by frame.
