I just tried again, and it looks like Johns Hopkins put the information behind a membership wall of some kind. Seems like bad timing to stop helping the world with this (previously) useful resource. Here's hoping it goes back up soon.

Foreign Policy: Trump Has Sabotaged America’s Coronavirus Response
For the United States, the answers are especially worrying because the government has intentionally rendered itself incapable. In 2018, the Trump administration fired the government’s entire pandemic response chain of command, including the White House management infrastructure. In numerous phone calls and emails with key agencies across the U.S. government, the only consistent response I encountered was distressed confusion. If the United States still has a clear chain of command for pandemic response, the White House urgently needs to clarify what it is—not just for the public but for the government itself, which largely finds itself in the dark.

P.S.: The John Hopkins page was simply down because of heavy traffic.

The survey has only now come to my attention, while listening to an interview with Fintan O'Toole hosted by World Affairs: "Brexit: Ireland and the English Question"

Anyway, here is part of the press release to the October 2018 findings

Key findings include:
  1. Clear majorities of English Conservatives would support Scottish independence (79%) or the collapse of the NI Peace Process (75%) as the price of Brexit.

  2. 87% of (overwhelmingly Unionist) Leave voters in Northern Ireland see the collapse of the peace process as an acceptable price for Brexit and 86% say that of a Yes vote in IndyRef2

  3. Nearly half (49%) of English Conservative voters do not think Scottish MPs should sit in the UK Cabinet and, in worse news for David Mundell as the SNP gathers in Glasgow, 24% of Scottish Conservative voters agree with them

  4. Voters typically expect higher levels of policy alignment with Europe post-Brexit (roaming charges, food hygiene standards, etc.) than within the UK (tuition fees, prescription charges, free social care, etc.)

  5. In none of the UK’s nations is a majority of taxpayers happy to see their taxes spent in other parts when those parts are mentioned by name

This explains so much of the behaviour of Tories in the British House of Parliament.

As one of the lead researchers comments:
Prof Henderson said:

“The data suggest that, in the pursuit of Brexit, Leave supporters across the UK would be relaxed about a fundamental transformation of the Union but this attitude is not confined exclusively to Leave voters. There is also evidence that Brexit is dislodging long-held red lines about the Union. If even Unionists in Northern Ireland care less about the territorial integrity of the UK than pursuing Brexit, then it really raises questions about the type of union we’re in, and indeed what Unionism means.

“At the same time, voters, including Leave voters, want ongoing policy conformity between the EU and the UK on everything apart from immigration. To any outsider it must look as the Conservative and Unionist government is prepared to rip up the UK constitution because its supporters wish to stop migration from the EU. Some might consider that a curious interpretation of Unionism.”

Trump's ambassadors are doing greeeaaaat

The Ambassodor to The Hague claimed in 2015 that islamists burn cars and politicians in The Netherlands and refuses to retract this false claim, instead claims he never said that despite video evidence. He gaslights the journalist for good measure:
https://youtu.be/SZ4RX5PsnFM

In a press conference as Ambassador he refuses to answer questions about the issue, a tactic the Dutch journalists are unwilling to tolerate:

Meanwhile, after 15 months of the post being left vacant, there is a new Ambassador to Germany. His first tweet to the German people after handing over his accreditation:
As @realDonaldTrump said, US sanctions will target critical sectors of Iran’s economy. German companies doing business in Iran should wind down operations immediately.

I signed up with photobucket more than 10 years ago for their free account, which allowed to link and embed images anywhere on the net. I have used their service extensively both on livejournal and the forums I frequent. They have now changed their TOS. The only option to continue linking and embedding images from their site comes with price tag of $400 per year, which I can not afford. In the future, expect to see a lot of broken image links when looking at past entries and comments of mine.

At G20, Donald Trump underlined he has neither the desire nor the capacity to lead the world and you got the strong sense some leaders were trying to find the best way to work around him, says Chris Uhlmann.

The RNC Files: Inside the Largest US Voter Data Leak
In what is the largest known data exposure of its kind, UpGuard’s Cyber Risk Team can now confirm that a misconfigured database containing the sensitive personal details of over 198 million American voters was left exposed to the internet by a firm working on behalf of the Republican National Committee (RNC) in their efforts to elect Donald Trump. The data, which was stored in a publicly accessible cloud server owned by Republican data firm Deep Root Analytics, included 1.1 terabytes of entirely unsecured personal information compiled by DRA and at least two other Republican contractors, TargetPoint Consulting, Inc. and Data Trust. In total, the personal information of potentially near all of America’s 200 million registered voters was exposed, including names, dates of birth, home addresses, phone numbers, and voter registration details, as well as data described as “modeled” voter ethnicities and religions.

A bad day for the UK and the EU

Article 50 has been triggered. Both the UK and the EU will lose as a result, whatever the details of the outcome.

Keep your eyes on the pea

As the two pages of tax returns take up a lot of oxygen from discussions on Trumpcare and the revised travel ban is being temporarily stopped in court to great news fanfare, you may want to keep another eye on the new Executive Order Comprehensive Plan for Reorganizing the Executive Branch. Each and every agency is given 180 days to justify its existence and the existence of all of its branches and programs and to put that in writing. They also need to analyse, wether or not any part of their work is redundant within the agency or with the work of another agency. Furthermore a call for a 180 day period for comments by the public will be put out. The final reports incorporating those comments will have to be written with the following consideration in mind:
  1. whether some or all of the functions of an agency, a component, or a program are appropriate for the Federal Government or would be better left to State or local governments or to the private sector through free enterprise;
  2. whether some or all of the functions of an agency, a component, or a program are redundant, including with those of another agency, component, or program;
  3. whether certain administrative capabilities necessary for operating an agency, a component, or a program are redundant with those of another agency, component, or program;
  4. whether the costs of continuing to operate an agency, a component, or a program are justified by the public benefits it provides; and
  5. the costs of shutting down or merging agencies, components, or programs, including the costs of addressing the equities of affected agency staff.
Combine this EO with a look at the heads of agencies, who in the past looked keen on dismantling them, and you have nightmare fuel, IMO. DOE, DoED, EPA, State Department (not really utilized by Trump), who needs them? Gutting science, environmental protection and diplomacy and reducing aid for the poor are focus of the budget, too, so fun times are ahead, indeed.

As we are on the subject of gutting and cutting:
A deep fear came to pass for many artists, museums, and cultural organizations nationwide early Thursday morning when President Trump, in his first federal budget plan, proposed eliminating the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

President Trump also proposed scrapping the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a key revenue source for PBS and National Public Radio stations, as well as the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.
