A Crazy Store!

We finally gave in on Sunday, and with my toque and gloves firmly in place, we braved the wind and cooler temperatures to take down the Christmas decorations. I do miss the twinkling lights but it did feel good to get it done at last.

Other than that, it’s been a pretty mellow week around here. The wind finally gave up on Tuesday and the temperatures climbed, which meant we were back to doing what we enjoy, spending as much time as possible outside soaking up the sunshine.

Wednesday was our usual shopping day, but this week we added a new adventure, a stop at Yuma Liquidation out in the Foothills. Hubby is going to build a set of stairs and was hoping to score a few composite boards. Since we don’t need much, paying full price seemed unnecessary and we thought for sure a liquidation store would have some pieces hiding somewhere in the store.

Image

This place is absolutely wild. Inside, it’s wall-to-wall stuff. Rows, stacks, piles … so much of everything that finding anything specific feels a bit like a scavenger hunt with no clues.

Image Image

And then there’s the outside area, which somehow manages to be even crazier. Junk stacked on junk, barely a path to walk through, and enough random items to make you wonder where it all came from in the first place.

Image

Those flats of orange lids are Gatorade. Aside from the fact that you couldn’t even get into those flats, would you buy them after they have been sitting in the hot sun for who knows how long?

Image

We did our best and walked the entire outside area, weaving and dodging as we went, but in the end there was not a single piece of wood to be found. Not even a lonely board hiding under a pile. So, our big bargain-hunting adventure turned into a bust and a wasted drive out to the Foothills.

Oh well. That’s how it goes sometimes.

That pretty much sums up our week. I hope you all had a great week too!

Until next time …

We Are Settling In To 2026

Our first week back home has already slipped by, and it has been a nice, gentle start to 2026. We arrived to some great weather, which always makes settling back in nicer. The last few days have cooled off and the wind has picked up with a bit of a bite to it, but warmer weather is on its way tomorrow.

And I hope with warmer weather comes less wind because I really need to get my Christmas decorations down before we head home for the summer … and lately the weather makes me feel that is not going to happen! Okay enough complaining, I’m having positive thoughts that tomorrow will be the day 😊

Happy hours have been a lot of fun and it has been great catching up with friends, sharing stories, and seeing familiar faces again.

Image

My last morning walk at home.

Hubby hasn’t wasted any time getting busy and is already working on another golf cart for a friend. I swear there’s always a project waiting for him … and of course I have a few in case he has some downtime 😂

Last night was the first Egg Game of the year, and tonight is the first Music Bingo of 2026. Normally it would have been last night, but there was a Wynonna concert in the ball room, so Saturday it is, and we’re looking forward to it.

And that about sums up our first week home and the first week of 2026. A mix of cooler breezes, good company, familiar routines, and the promise of warmer days ahead … a pretty good way to start the year.

Image

My first morning walk here … both pretty but definitely different from each other!

An Arizona Sunset to Remember

I wasn’t planning to write a blog today, but I had some sunset photos from last night that I really wanted to share. During our drive from Gila Bend to Wellton, Arizona, we spent nearly an hour travelling straight into the most beautiful sunset, it seemed to stretch on forever.

Image

Today we headed out to pick up a few groceries, and aside from that, we spent the day doing exactly what we enjoy most when we are here for the winter … visiting with friends and soaking up the beautiful weather. And of course it has to end with watching Canada vs Czechia in the World Junior’s Hockey semifinals😊

Image

Barring anything especially interesting, I’ll be settling back into my once-a-week blogging routine as we slip back into our relaxed winter routine .

Back Where It’s Warm

It was a very early start to our day this morning, and for our daughter too, as we had to leave for the airport at 4:00 a.m. 😞 The upside was that checking our bags and getting through security didn’t take long, which meant we actually had time to grab breakfast. That was a bonus, especially since we didn’t have time to eat when we landed in Vancouver.

Image

It was clear and not too cold when we left Kelowna. It looks like there is snow in the grass but that is just an illusion … there was no snow.

Image

But there was no shortage of rain when we landed in Vancouver!

There have been some changes to U.S. departures at Vancouver International Airport, and unfortunately not for the better. Passengers now have to go through an additional security checkpoint and because it’s a U.S. flight, you’re required to remove your footwear. That really slows things down this time of year when most people are wearing boots. Customs itself was quick but then we funnelled into a very busy area of the airport … made even busier by the holiday season. In the end, I barely had time to refill my water bottle before it was time to board.

Image

And it was still coming down strong when we left Vancouver!

We happily left the heavy rain in Vancouver behind and, three hours later, landed in sunny, warm Phoenix. It felt so good to ditch the coat and boots and put my flip-flops back on 😂

Image

But it was warm and sunny when we got on the Sky Train at Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix to go to our parking lot 😊

We arrived back at Maxx shortly before 7:00 p.m., got everything unpacked, and are now ready to hit the sack. It’s been a long day!

Until next time …

One Last Visit

Our time at home is coming to an end tomorrow, which always makes me a little sad… but the thought of heading back to warmer weather certainly softens the blow.

Aside from a bit of housework, washing the bedding, and squeezing in one last errand, it was a pretty mellow kind of day … the calm before travel day.

Image

Farewell condo … thanks J for the wonderful accommodations!

Right now, we are waiting for our daughter to pick us up and take us to her place for the night. With an early flight in the morning, it just makes things easier since they live close to the airport and she’ll drop us off. Best of all, it means we get one last visit with three of our grandsons before we head out 😊

Until next time …

Welcome 2026!

Wow it’s the first day of 2026 and I’m happy to say I haven’t aged a bit! 😉

We welcomed the new year with smiles after a great sleep, and unlike most years, we actually had plans for New Year’s Day. We were off to the Elks Meat Draw, big excitement to kick off 2026! 😂

The event began with a special draw for fifteen racks of ribs. Throughout the year, anyone who buys tickets for all the draws at the Saturday meat draws earns a red ticket, which goes into this New Year’s rib draw. Hubby and I were sure we’d win … mostly because we have no access to freezer space until we return with Maxx in the spring. And naturally, with that kind of confidence, we did win a rack of ribs.

Image

The regular meat draw followed, but our theory of “no freezer space,” is sure to mean we will walk away with lots of meat didn’t work because we didn’t win anything. Our nephew did have that first time luck and won a pack of four smoked pork chops and of course my sister and brother-in-law won three times … they are the luckiest people we know!

It was a fun afternoon spent with my sister and brother-in-law, along with my nephew and his girlfriend visiting from Tofino.

We had all decided many weeks ago that we would not drive to the Elks Hall today so that we could enjoy a few festive drinks during our last visit together before we return in the spring. The original plan was simple, Uber to the Elks Hall and Uber home. Normally, that would run about $40 total. But New Year’s Day apparently means surge pricing… suddenly our $40 outing was going to cost at least $100!

Image

Looking at the ice build up you would think it has been very cold here but we have been above 0C/32F since we arrived home ,,,, so I’m not sure where all that ice came from!

Now, it’s not that we can’t afford it, we just couldn’t justify it. So instead, we decided to take a bus to the Elks Hall … $12 for the two of us (still ridiculous because transfers are no longer included and the shortest route involved changing buses, so we had to pay twice). But even so, it beat the Uber price that we were quoted on the app. So fast forward to this morning when my sister text to say they had booked a cab for a lot less! Okay let’s check that out … hubby phoned the cab company and for us )we have a little further to go) the price was $25.00 minimum … nope still better off do take the bus. Then hubby decided to check the Uber app again and it turned out if we booked our ride to pick us up right away it would be $12.50, if we wanted to schedule our ride to arrive at a certain time is was $25.00, because it include the surcharge. So it was a toss up, $12.00 for the bus where we would have to stand in the cold waiting for it, or $12.50 (and of course there would be a tip added to that), to wait in the warmth of the condo and go door to door. Yes we spent the extra money and went with the Uber … and we did it both ways.

Image

So in the end what what was supposed to cost us at least $100 turned into $30.00 for door to door service … so if you are doing Uber double check your prices on the day of travel. In the end it cost us a bit of money to “do the responsible thing,” but absolutely worth it not to drink and drive. Having been hit by a drunk driver when our daughter was a baby, we never, ever take chances.

Here’s to a fun first day of 2026 … good laughs, great company, and responsible choices to start the year right. 🥂✨

Wishing each of you a happy, healthy, and memorable 2026. May it be filled with laughter, good friends, and moments worth writing about. 💛

Until next time …

Happy New Year!

So what did we get up to today, hmm let me think back 😊.

We started the morning with our Wednesday coffee group and like yesterday it was a good time with familiar faces and easy conversation. We said our goodbyes until spring, shared hugs all around, and then headed out to meet our daughter. Hubby dropped me off and continued on to their place. Our daughter and I went for pedicures and as usual, that came with lots of chatting and laughs.

Image

We cross under the road on our walk to lunch.

Once our pedicures were done we made a few quick stops for her to do things and then returned to their house. Hubby and our son-in-law where fixing their washing machine so I hung around upstairs and visited with two of our grandsons.

Finally the guys were happy with their work so we headed back to the condo, parked the car, and walked up to a neighbourhood pub for a late lunch.  We were surprised how busy the pub was and enjoyed running into more than a few people we know. This was one of our favourite haunts when we still lived in our house.

There is the pub on the right hand side of the river.

Image

The condo where we are staying from the bridge above the creek … it is a short walk!

After lunch we walked back to the condo and arrived in time to turn on the Canada/Finland World Junior game. And yippee, Canada won again!

After the game we enjoyed a soak in the hot tub and will now tuck into bed for the night. Gone are the days where we feel the need to stay up until midnight to welcome in the new year, it will still be waiting in the morning and we’ll welcome it then 😂

The condo on our return. It looks pretty in the sunset.

Hubby and I wish you all a wonderful New Year filled with health, happiness, and good memories ahead. 🎉

Until next time …

Another Day, Another Grandson Visit 😊

We started our day meeting up with our regular Tuesday coffee group. Familiar faces, easy laughter, and that feeling of being part of a little community you don’t even realize you need until you have it. It’s amazing how a simple cup of coffee can turn into the best part of the morning when it’s shared with good people.

From there it was off to tackle a few errands, nothing exciting, but there were a few items that we needed and wanted to purchase back in Canada … and in Canadian dollars 😊

Image

Not the best picture but I like how you can look across the lake and see Christmas lights.

Now we are getting ready to head out for dinner with one of our grandsons. It is always fun to share a meal, catch up on his life, and have more than a few laughs with this young man who is growing up all to fast.💛

Until next time …

Grandchildren Beat Hockey Every Time

We actually had a couple of plans lined up today and both involving lunch with friends. We ended up bowing out of the first invitation since we had already visited with them the other night, choosing instead to meet up with another couple we haven’t seen yet. Of course, life being what it is, they had to cancel. Oh well another day relaxing wasn’t a bad thing and there was a hockey game on tonight, which of course we wanted to watch, so all was good.

Then came the big dilemma … stay home to watch the World Juniors (Canada vs. Denmark) or head to our daughter’s place for dinner. I’m sure you can guess how that turned out!

Image

Hmm, not what you want to see outside at 5:00 a.m., fortunately it wasn’t anything to worry about. At one point there were two fire trucks but one left almost as soon as it arrived.

Time with our daughter and family wins every time, especially when grandchildren and great grandchildren cuddles are on the table. It was a fun evening with family and I was able to get the hockey game scores on my phone … and once again Canada won! So it was an absolutely perfect evening!

Until next time …

Lunch With My Sister … And A Fun Surprise!

So what did we get up to today? Well, the big excitement was a late lunch with my sister and brother-in-law. We aimed for a 2:00 meet-up, perfect timing for happy hour deals. Hubby volunteered to be the designated driver, earning himself a gold star and our collective gratitude 😊

We managed to stretch lunch into a very enjoyable three-hour visit. Even though we’ve spent quite a bit of time with them since getting home, my sister and I never seem to run out of things to talk about. The guys mostly just smile, nod, and carry on … possibly wondering how two people can chat that much without taking a breath … nope they have been around long enough to know that is just us!

Image

The only picture I have to share … the hot tub where we have enjoyed more than a few evenings.

After dropping them off we headed back to the condo, where the excitement continued with a call from our youngest son and his wife. They invited us on a fun trip they’re planning for April, but it’s top-secret because the kids don’t know yet. Now, I’m sure none of you will tell their kids (since you have no idea who they are), but still, I’ve been sworn to secrecy. So no details… for now. Seriously I have to have some intrigue in my blog! 😄

Until next time …
