Bath, February 18 2025. The difficult decision has been made to close iO Academy to new admissions from the end of March 2025.
iO Academy was founded as a software bootcamp to train skilled software engineers, data engineers and scientists. At that time, the UK faced a national shortage of these skills. The Academy took people with little-to-no experience, but with the aptitude to learn, from zero to hero in as little as 12 weeks, ready for their first tech job. Furthermore, 2023-2024 alone saw over 100 individuals complete courses and upskilling workshops. This included: software development, Agile project management, data science and machine learning.
iO Academy supported the wider tech sector in the South West, and nationally, by producing a regular stream of software developers and data science specialists ready to fill Mayden’s and other employers’ vacancies. In total, more than 1000 students have graduated from the Academy in the last decade. This has benefitted more than 50 companies, mainly across Bath and Bristol.
However, like many software bootcamps, iO Academy has been experiencing challenging commercial conditions since the pandemic. The Academy adapted their offering to include remote courses and explored alternative funding streams. However, the market for high quality training isn’t in demand like it was when the iO Academy was founded.
“iO and its trainers are multi-award winning, and ranked in the top six coding bootcamps globally.” Says Chris May, Founder of Mayden and iO Academy. “We are enormously proud of all we have achieved and we are profoundly disappointed to have reached the end of the road after nearly ten years. Nevertheless, in that time we have helped over a thousand students with their career in tech. Furthermore, the academy has had a significant impact on our own business, Mayden. Additionally, it also benefitted a number of our industry partners in the region and beyond.”
The iO community will remain and the alumni network will receive updates on developments.
