So, last week I got a traffic ticket. This morning, I was checking the Franklin County Municipal Court website (which is horrible, btw) to make sure my payment went through OK, and I find that I owe more money than the officer told me. After playing phone tag with the court clerk for awhile, I find out that it's because the officer is handing out 10 month old tickets that no longer reflect current fines. So if I hadn't checked up on this TODAY, there would have been a WARRANT FOR MY ARREST for not paying the fines and "skipping" my court date. Fuck the CPD. |

No, not since my last LJ post, but since I pasted these Eris decals up around town. Some have fared pretty well, others have weathered severely, and a few are gone or else I don't remember where I put them. |

I was just informed that DEX has hired a new plant manager who is fluent in Japanese, rendering my position redundant (even though it already was, by and large). So, today is my last day working here. I kind of just wanna leave, since it's not like I'm doing anything here anyway, but I suppose there's no reason not to stay and get paid for a few more hours. Ah well. To be honest, I didn't like this job all that much anyway, outside of the paycheck. It just felt like a monumental waste of time. I'm really not surprised they're cutting me; after all, one of the things Funai was complaining about was that DEX was going over budget and had too many people who were not directly involved in production. I'm still not really sure why they hired me in the first place. I don't think they know, either. |

Well, since I'm pretty much stuck at work without much to do for 9 hours a day, I caved in and got a twitter account. Who knows if I'll actually use it much or not. My user name is Phonoballoons. I doubt I'll set it up to do LJ updates, so if you're interested in reading it, just follow it o the twitter page. Anyone else have a twitter user name to drop on me? |

So, I've got a job now. I'm working at the Columbus branch of Data Exchange Corporation, or DEX (their wonderfully vague website: www.dex.com). My official title is Project Manager, but really I'm just a translator. Basically I'm here to deal with one of DEX's clients, Funai Electric, which manufactures TVs and DVD players that are marketed under a number of brands here in the US including Magnavox, Emerson, and Sylvania. I sit in on meetings with them to make sure that no pertinent information is lost (Funai has their own translator who does most of the work already). I also tag along on warehouse inspection tours and translate emails to and from Japanese. Aside from that, I sit in front of this computer all day doing more or less nothing. In fact, so far today, I have done exactly NO work, because apparently DEX isn't meeting with anyone from Funai today. It's kind of nice, I guess. Kind of like getting paid to do what I was already doing anyway, only now I have to get up at 7:15 and drive 20 minutes to do it. So until next time, this is Project Manager Thomas LaPlante, SIGNING OUT! |

IN THE NAME OF KNOWLEDGE! So, my research defense was yesterday, and of course I passed! If you want a copy of my paper, let me know and I'll send you a pdf. From Manga to Comic: Visual Language in Translation It's about Translating comics from one language to another, and the nature of the visual language carried in the pictures. Mostly. There's lots of cool pictures and examples! |

I FINISHED THE FIRST DRAFT OF MY THESIS! I've been working on that damn paper day and night with little rest every day for two weeks straight. I've barely even watched TV (not even adult swim on sundays!). BUT NOW I PUT THAT BASTARD IN THE CAN! I really wanted to finish before Christmas because I was sure I wouldn't be getting any work done afterwards. AND I DID! That seriously is the best Christmas gift I could have gotten myself. It's 38 pages long. By a wide, wide WIDE margin the longest thing I've ever written. My right arm is killing me from the repetitive motion of typing- all of it was done in the last four days. It is only the first draft of course, and since I don't have my scanner here, there aren't even any examples in the paper. SO by the time it's finally done it's going to be quite a bit longer. But the hardest part is done! |

Also, the hinges that hold my laptop's monitor on have kind of...stopped turning easily. The left side has pretty much stopped turning completely, and the stress of opening and closing the monitor now transfers to the plastic casing instead instead of the steel hinge. So, the casing has completely cracked on the left side. This means there is now even more stress on the right hinge, so the casing is beginning to crack there, too. Because of the way it's put together, if the casing cracks all the way on both sides, I won't be able to close the monitor AT ALL anymore. So now I basically just leave it open all the time anyway to avoid stressing the case any further. And that means that my laptop computer now must not only be tied to a wall at all times due to borked battery, but now I can't even close the monitor anymore. I want a real, actually portable laptop. |
