Italy

A new Italian authorized station (re)appeared on medium waves this weekend. Radio Marina previously broadcast for some weeks on 1071 kHz during 2011, then went forever silent. But on Saturday 29 March 2025 it appeared again, this time on 1107 kHz, testing with identification loop, and non stop music on Sunday and this morning. Welcome back! They transmit from Vigonovo, between Padua and Venice, in region Veneto. A big thank you to fellow DXer Marzio Artusi for the alert.
Their signal is currently very weak in Forlì, 130 km from the station, requiring Perseus22 blending function with a secondary dipole antenna coupled to a Wellbrook ALA-1530 to reduce background noise.
At https://youtu.be/foPoAvY7yXk I published a short video, where I added also a short clip from IZ3LCH’s KiwiSDR in Padua for a clearer identification announcement with their email address radiomarina-am (at) libero (dot) it.

Space Weather

A GIANT HOLE IN THE SUN’S ATMOSPHERE: Geomagnetic storms are underway on March 26th as Earth enters a stream of solar wind flowing from a giant hole in the sun’s atmosphere. It’s one of the biggest “coronal holes” in years, and its emissions could engulf Earth for the next 24 to 48 hours. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras during this time. The pruning of underperforming signals across the industry continues as Townsquare Media outright surrendered the licenses of two stations to the FCC on Tuesday.
94.7 KVLL-FM Wells TX and 1110 WUPE Pittsfield MA were both turned in for cancellation.

KVLL-FM, which covered the Lufkin portion of the Lufkin/Nacogdoches market, had most recently operated as Classic Hits “Fun 94.7” since January 2024. The Class C2 license was licensed with 50kW/117m. The station had cycled through many formats in recent years going from AC “My 94.7” to Regional Mexican “La Mejor” in February 2020, Spanish Adult Hits “Juan 94.7” in June 2022, and then Classic Hits.
While KVLL-FM is off the air, the station continues to stream as of this writing.

Whoopee 100.1 WUPE-FM 103.3 1110 WUPE Pittsfield Live 95.9 WBEC-FM Galaxy Communications

1110 WUPE Pittsfield MA had been part of the Classic Hits “Whoopee” trimulcast feeding 103.3 W277CJ Pittsfield along with 100.1 WUPE-FM North Adams. Ahead of the license surrender, Townsquare changed the parent signal of the translator to 95.9 WBEC-HD2 Pittsfield. The daytime only signal operated with 5kW directional from a two tower array on company-owned land.

USAGM MW relays status.
I can most certainly comment on HLAZ the FEBC transmitter on 1566 from South Korea.  They immediately switched to their own programming, when there used to be VOA (or was it RFA) Korean.

VOA stopped immediately, but RFA continued until Sunday both on 1188 and 1566 kHz.

A 2023 sale will lead to a frequency swap taking place in Des Moines on Monday, April 1.
Trinity Communications, the operator of “Iowa Catholic Radio” had purchased 105.5 KDLS-FM Perry/Des Moines IA from Pedro Zamora’s Latin Broadcasting Corporation in 2023 for $1.84 million. Its programming will finally debut on the station with new KIHS call letters on April 1.
Northpine reports that Iowa Catholic Radio’s current Des Moines signals will take on the Regional Mexican “La Ley” brand currently on KDLS-FM. Trinity’s 1150 KWKY Des Moines and St. Gabriel Communications’ 94.5 K233BT Des Moines will switch programming to that brand on April 1 as well with the AM taking new KDLX call letters.

Good LWBC Propagation into Midwest USA Tonight.
Just a heads up, currently good propagation on the LWBC band this evening. At 02:00 UTC, like a light switch turning on the band came alive. Currently recording 171 kHz from Morocco. Enclosed is a small snip.

Spring equinox bandscan 2025
I had two goes at it this time. The first was at ca. 1950Z when I went to turn on the entrance and outside lights. A bit of wind and rain but I could tell that only the Brits were audible. 1089 kHz was the lone listenable signal at that moment. The other Brits were still rather weak

I next remembered the radio at 0115Z. Still some wind but the clouds were clearing away. I was still only getting Brits at a usable strength, with weak voices and fluttering carriers to remind me that there are still countries other than the UK that use the MW band.
The LW was ‘a very quick bath’: France, England and Poland.
