All India Radio begins two-hour morning Gurbani broadcast from Golden Temple, Amritsar.
AIR, Jalandhar, has been airing kirtan from the Golden Temple for three hours daily on MW, including a two-hour morning slot from 4 am to 6 am.
All India Radio (AIR), Amritsar, has begun broadcasting full two-hour early morning Gurbani from the Golden Temple, a move widely welcomed by listeners.
The service, initiated by Prasar Bharati from January 13, enables devotees in Amritsar, Tarn Taran and Gurdaspur districts, as well as listeners across the International Border in Pakistan, to listen to the sacred kirtan.
Since the launch of AIR, Amritsar, on September 24, 2018, the station had been broadcasting Gurbani from 5 am to 6 am.
The FM transmission gets relayed from AIR’s Gharinda village centre near Attari and is operated under the External Services Division of AIR. Besides Gurbani, the division also airs special Urdu and Saraiki programmes, which has audiences in Pakistan, too.
Meanwhile, AIR, Jalandhar, has been airing kirtan from the Golden Temple for three hours daily on MW (medium wave), including a two-hour morning slot from 4 am to 6 am.
Former engineer Harjap Singh Aujla, who had been spearheading the demand, said medium wave transmissions were often unclear in distant areas and had also lost relevance as the use of MW radio sets declined.
“FM transmission offers better sound quality and is free from signal shadow caused by high-rise buildings. Residents of four border districts of Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Gurdaspur and Pathankot will now be able to listen the full Gurbani (two hours) clearly on FM,” added Aujla.
He expressed hope that AIR, Amritsar, would also start the evening Gurbani broadcast from 4.30 pm to 5.30 pm, on the lines of AIR, Jalandhar. Kulwant Singh Ankhi, patron of the Amritsar Vikas Manch, said many people still preferred listening to Gurbani on the radio. Even in Lahore, several listeners tuned into Gurbani rendered in classical ragas, including noted Punjabi poet Ustad Daman, who was known to listen to kirtan regularly, he said. Satnam Singh of Dhotian village said listening to the morning kirtan on the radio was like a daily act of worship for him.
The demand for Gurbani broadcast on radio dates back to the period of the Dharam Yudh Morcha in 1982. After Operation Bluestar in June 1984, AIR, Jalandhar, began relaying shabad kirtan from the Golden Temple for three hours daily.
Bhagwant Singh Dhangera, manager of the Golden Temple, said, “It is encouraging that devotees can now listen to Gurbani for two hours. Many people prefer radio over television for kirtan as Gurbani is considered more of an art to be heard than watched.”

News Update January 2026
ROSS REVENGE CHARITY DRY DOCK APPEAL REACHES HALF-A-MILLION POUNDS

As we enter 2026 the fund to finance repairs to Ross Revenge has reached an incredible half-a-million pounds.
This is a lot of money for which we take no credit – it has all been raised by YOU, through donations to our Ross Revenge charity, charity Crowdfunder, fundraisers and by purchases from our web shop. Praise must go to our generous supporters and listeners. We are immensely grateful.
There is no upper limit to how much we could spend on Ross Revenge Simply put, the more money we have the more work we can put in hand, and we continue to fundraise to get as much essential work done as possible while the ship is out of the water.
We hope to get Ross Revenge into to SMS dry dock at Lowestoft in the spring and we must hire a sizeable tugs for the journey. As the ship is too deep to enter dry dock without assistance, we are hiring specialist buoyancy bags and divers to fit them. When inflated the ship should be lifted enough to get her into the dock.
The priorities once in dry dock are sandblasting, repairing and painting the 220 ft hull and structure, servicing the sea chests, replacing the rotting wood lower decks with a hardwearing grid matting system and, if funds allow, replacing the rusting metal fore and aft decks – proudly repainting CAROLINE 648 AM once more.
Everyone involved with Ross Revenge would like to send our gratitude and appreciation to our listeners for your continued support.

Impact AM 747 is off-air for some weeks. The operator told me that they needed to move their antenna 20 meters (including ground network) because the farmer that owns the lands wants to store grass on the area.
They plan to be back in spring.

When Audacy flips Rhythmic Throwbacks “104.3 Jams” WBMX Chicago to a simulcast of Sports “670 The Score” WSCR on February 2, its WBMX call letters will return to its former home in Boston on Hot AC “Mix 104.1” WWBX.

The WBMX call letters first gained notoriety in Chicago on then-Urban 102.7 WBMX from 1974 until its flip to Adult R&B “V103” WVAZ in 1988. It would have a much longer run in Boston starting in February 1991 when “Mix 98.5” launched. The call letters would move with the format to 104.1 in August 2009 and everything remained stable until the day Entercom completed its acquisition of CBS Radio in November 2017. “104.3 Jams” launched claiming the WBMX Chicago legacy and swiping the calls from their well-established sister in Boston.

Now with the call letters having served a cumulative 23 years in Chicago and 26 years in Boston, they will return on February 2 to the market where it has still spent more time.

The profits from Whiteoaks Communications’ land sale of the CJYE/CJMR (see below) transmitter site will be used to rebuild their CKTB transmitter site to current standards. In addition, the primary transmitters of CJYE and CJMR will replace CKTB’s end-of-life transmitters, as primary and backup; Whiteoaks President Matt Caine estimates the current CKTB transmitters to be 50-70 years old. No word on whether any of the CJYE and CJMR towers either can be or will be used in the CKTB rebuild.

1200 BC Vancouver CJRJ
(Corrected) The CRTC has approved the change in ownership, from Shusma Datt to Kulwant Singh Dhesi. Dhesi’s company, 1101651 BC Ltd, will purchase Datt’s company, IT Productions Ltd In anticipation of this, the station recently changed branding from Spice Radio to Swift Radio. CJRJ’s new license will still include several programming restrictions. At least 11 cultural groups must be served in at least 17 different languages for at least 95% of the broadcast week; only 5% of programming can be in English, French or Indigenous languages. At least 73% of that 95% must be in Hindustani or Punjabi languages. No programming is allowed in any of the Chinese languages. The CRTC does not count midnight to 6:00 AM in these percentages but the Chinese language ban sounds like it also covers overnights.

First heard January 12th running a recorded message that they are leaving 1320 as part of a Digital First approach. Was off the air by early afternoon on January 13th. As well as their existing multiple streaming methods, CJMR and co-owned CJYE are actively working on using HD channels on one or more of the three recently-acquired FM stations in Hamilton and St Catharines. CJMR and CJYE share an Oakville transmitter site that is being sold for residential development at a price that far exceeds the value of both stations. In addition, parents at a newly-built nearby school are concerned about RF radiation from the two transmitters and have been actively pushing to get rid of the transmitter site.

Once the move is made to 900, the station will be allowed to continue broadcasting on 1540, simulcasting 900, for one year, to ensure that all of their listeners have migrated to 900.

SOLAR PROTON STORM IN PROGRESS: Energetic protons from the sun are raining down on Earth. They were accelerated in our direction by yesterday’s powerful X-class solar flare (described below). This is called a “solar proton storm,” and currently it is category S3. Shortwave radios inside the Arctic Circle aren’t working right now due to this storm, which is causing a polar cap absorption event. Currently, there is no danger to air travelers.

There is an update on 1540 CHIN who had applied to move from 1540kHz to 900kHz with much-reduced power (see NA News in Medium Wave News 71/3 July/August). On 15th January 2026 CRTC approved the move to 900kHz according Broadcasting Decision 2026-12. Once the move is made to 900 KHz, the station will be allowed to continue broadcasting on 1540, simulcasting 900, for one year, to ensure that all of their listeners have migrated to 900. The licensee must implement the technical amendments no later than 15th January 2028.
