We have been working on a goal for the good part of 2019. As a family, we have been reading The Book of Mormon. What's changed about the goal for this year, is that we have been trying to read with questions in mind. Before reading a chapter (most nights), Stephen or I will ask the boys a question of focus to listen for while we study. These questions could be summaries of the stories, important lessons, repeated phrases that we want to remember, important commandments, etc.
After the reading is done, we discuss what we learned (or sometimes didn't learn.). Some of our favorite nights have been picking up on random and unusual phrases that have been repeated, like "tight like unto a dish," to describe the barges used to cross the sea. Each night, the boys can earn up to 3 scripture points for correct answers. When we reach 50 points as a family, we get a treat together!
This has been a year of changes in our Scripture studies. We have seen Evan's readying slowly improve. We have seen the attention span and motivation of all the boys improve. I'm grateful that we will be doing a churchwide study on this scripture again in 2020 and can't wait to see the promptings we get for more goals in the new year!
