We focuson Change:

Transformation

At MLA+, we design for positive transformation, not by starting from scratch, but by building on existing places, knowledge, and people. We prioritize change that supports regeneration, balances human and ecological needs, and is guided by shared values.

Climate

We respond to the climate crisis by shifting from ego-centric to eco-centric thinking, creating spaces that align with local environments and respect ancient wisdom alongside modern expertise.

Collaboration

Collaboration is at the heart of our work. We partner with local communities and experts across disciplines, to value their knowledge, and co-create long-term solutions. Designing with and for the local is not just a method, it’s our mindset.

Beibei Xiema Science City

Beibei Xiema Science City

Beibei Xiema Science City

The one in Beibei west is expected to be the largest science city in China, taking place in an area with high ecological and cultural value. As the north end of the vast Beibei plan, our design for the Xiema Science City negotiates a synergetic relation between the new development and the natural assets of the Longfeng river valley. Science-related program becomes the interface between city and natural areas, benefitting both conditions and providing a unique experience for local scientists. This project proposes a series of hybrid typologies to bring nature, tradition and science together: Innovation farms, Mountain eco-village, River valley campus, Industry 4.0 and Service platforms. And the river valley is the setting for a series of mixed-use programmatic islands. They are arranged and shaped according to topography, connected through a series of path systems and bridges. Living and working in these top facilities clusters will feel like being completely immersed in nature.

London Olympic’s Legacy

The 2012 London Olympic Park and its use after the games is an exceptional example of transformation. It delivered the largest event in the world on a complex post-industrial inner city site. And while doing this, it created a platform for a dynamic new development, and a piece of city that stitches together neighbouring districts with positive effect. The perspective beyond the big event is one core change pattern is at the heart of this success. ‘Beyond the big event” means to take on two challenging tasks in parallel: On one hand to plan and to deliver an event for the most talented sport people and for visitors from around the globe with extremely hard deadlines, and organizational and spatial guidelines dominated by safety, efficiency, crowd movement, advertising, sponsorship and a temporary TV spectacle. In parallel, it means to plan and to deliver spaces that are not ‘useless’ beyond the event, but that will have a long term future as lively urban quarter, as destination, as development platform, and as accessible and inclusive new focal point of a transformed metropolis. The reuse of the pre-existing structures and of investment for the event played a key role to generate this positive future.

Shenshan Nanshan Hi-tech Industrial Park

MLA+ participated in International Competition for Conceptual Master Plan & Phase I Architectural Design of Shenshan Special Cooperation Zone (Nanshan) Hi-tech Industrial Park. The Shenshan Cooperation Zone has a beautiful natural base and extremely high development potential. Nanshan District has outstanding innovative power and is an important engine for Shenzhen’s rapid development. Shenshan (Nanshan) Hi-tech Park should of course learn from Nanshan’s development experience and leverage each other. But at the same time, the cooperation between Nanshan and Shenshan must go further. The ambition must be more than just creating an industrial “spill over” zone. We must operate the hi-tech park in a long term, and create “NANSHAN+” from 3 key levels: urbanistically, architecturally and operationally.
